Description
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office employs over six hundred sworn and civilian employees in five divisions: Custody, Detention, Investigations, Patrol and Support Services. A Deputy Sheriff is a sworn peace officer who works in patrol, detective, bailiff, civil, transportation units and the jail facilities. Special units include search and rescue, narcotics task force, bomb technician, hazardous materials, off-road motorcycle, canine, emergency services, community policing, school resource and gang task force.
Qualifications
Specialized Training: Completion of a State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved basic academy or current enrollment in the basic academy with completion of academy training prior to appointment.
Certificate: Candidate must successfully complete field officer training and receive a Basic POST certificate within one year of appointment or be subject to termination.
Education: High school diploma or its equivalent.
License: Valid California Class C driver license or equivalent.
Citizenship: U.S. citizen; permanent resident aliens must apply for citizenship one year before application date.
Background: No felony convictions and no recent drug use.
Physical Requirements: Must be free from any condition which might adversely affect fitness for the duties of the position; uncorrected visual acuity of at least 20/100 in each eye, correctable to 20/30 in each eye; weight must be in proportion to height.
Other: Willing to work irregular hours, holidays, weekends, and rotating shifts.

Anyone may apply. This is a continuous recruitment which may close at any time. The final filing date will be posted 5 days in advance in the Employee and Public Services Department of the County. A supplemental application form must be submitted in addition to our regular employment application form. An application screening committee may select those applicants whose education, experience, training and knowledge most closely matches the requirements of the position and the needs of the Sheriff's Office. The examination will consist of a panel interview (weight: pass/fail). The panel interview will include the evaluation of a written exercise given just prior to the interview. Candidates will be notified of the date, time and place of the exam. Subsequent phases of the selection process include a psychological evaluation, polygraph test and medical examination. The Sheriff's Office will conduct final interviews with candidates who pass all required tests and evaluations. Final selection of candidates is made by the Sheriff's Office and is based on panel interview performance and information gathered in the background investigation, psychological and polygraph assessments and medical evaluations.
