The Position

Salary $28.63 - $34.80/hour

TEMPORARY, EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYEES ARE NOT IN THE CLASSIFIED CIVIL SERVICE. IN ADDITION, THEY DO NOT RECEIVE ANY EMPLOYEE BENEFITS SUCH AS: MEDICAL OR DENTAL INSURANCE, VACATION OR SICK LEAVE; OR ELIGIBILITY TO TAKE PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS. IN LIEU OF COUNTY RETIREMENT, EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATE IN A MANDATORY PRETAX SAVINGS PROGRAM THROUGH DEFERRED COMPENSATION AND MEDICARE WITHHOLDING. TEMPORARY, EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYEES ARE LIMITED IN THEIR EMPLOYMENT TO A MAXIMUM OF ONE CALENDAR YEAR. THESE EMPLOYEES MUST BE OFF THREE MONTHS BEFORE THEY CAN BE RE-EMPLOYED ON AN EXTRA-HELP BASIS.

Under direction, the Fire Instructor (Extra-help) plans, organizes, and conducts training of staff of various fire agencies; develops instructional material; conducts classroom and field instruction; and performs related duties as required.

The job class is designed to pool qualified instructors to fill requests for training and operations. The incumbents work under the direction of the Fire Services Officer and are expected to exercise considerable judgment in developing training lesson plans, operational procedures, and delivering field training. Incumbents are expected to obtain a valid first aide and CPR Instructor card within the first six months of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Fire Instructor IA and IB or equivalent courses. A valid first aide and CPR instructor's card. Completion of the State Department of Education Fire Instructors' Training Course and an Emergency Medical Technician I Training Course is highly desirable. A valid first aide and CPR Instructor's card must be obtained within the first six months of employment.

Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the aforementioned knowledge and abilities. Normally, one year of fire suppression and prevention experience including experience in a training assignment would provide such opportunity.

Knowledge and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: the principles and methods of employee training; effective teaching methods for the adult learner; fire operational procedures; current developments in fire suppression and prevention.

Working knowledge of: fire, rescue and emergency care procedures; written and oral communications including language mechanics, syntax, and English composition.

Knowledge of: continuing education needs of fire personnel; available continuing education resources for fire personnel.

Knowledge and skill in: demonstrating basic and advanced fire suppression, fire operations, safety, and prevention.

Ability to: organize and conduct fire science training programs; communicate and interact in situations requiring instructions, persuasion, and counseling and to participate in conferences, group discussions, and individual interviews; coordinate visual observation, oral or written communication into concise, descriptive written or oral formats which reflect continuity of thought; and effectively convey concepts or conclusions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, representatives of fire agencies, and educational institutions; understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, operating procedures and ordinances and federal, state, and local legislation; operate various types of audio-visual equipment; maintain records for training program; attend meetings.

Selection Procedure

This selection procedure will consist of an application appraisal (weight 100%). Each application will be thoroughly evaluated for satisfaction of minimum qualifications and relevance of educational course work, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Candidates possessing the most appropriate job-related qualifications will be placed on a temporary employment list and referred to the department for consideration.

Candidates referred for possible appointment may be required to sign a waiver enabling a private investigator to check into the applicant's employment and/or personal history. The background check may include criminal and civil filings, address verification, social security verification, driving history, any professional license mentioned, secondary education, employment history, and reference development, credit history, and financial information related to bankruptcy, liens, and judgements. Failure to sign the waiver may result in the application not being considered further. Background information obtained will be made available to candidates as required by law.
