Description
The County of San Mateo is seeking an experienced Medical Records Technician (MRT) for the Burlingame Health Center long-term care facility. The MRT will process inpatient health records which includes assembly and analysis; review, retrieval and/or entry of information and data necessary for use in the evaluation of quality of care and utilization review; and perform medical legal duties pertaining to medical records. NOTE: The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies.
The MRT-I is the trainee level class of this series. Incumbents are expected to promote to the II level after gaining experience, demonstrating necessary proficiency and upon receiving the required certification.
The MRT-II is the journey level which is fully competent to independently perform the full range of duties. Incumbents are responsible for assembly, analysis and abstracting and may provide lead direction to other medical records personnel or specialize in the area of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding to patient medical records.
The ideal candidate will be able to function independently skilled in recognizing and extracting pertinent medical information from charts, forms and other documents and will have a working knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding.
Qualifications
Licensure/Certification: MRT-I: Acquisition of a valid certificate as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) within two years of employment. MRT-II - Possession of a valid certificate as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) issued by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is: MRT-I -two years experience working in medical records with exceptional skills, knowledge of medical terminology, disease process, hospital accreditation and regulatory standards. MRT-II - one year of auditing, assembling, abstracting and coding information from patient medical records in a hospital medical records unit. Experience in Long Term Care is highly desirable.
Keyboarding/Typing Requirement: Ability to type 40 words per minute.
Knowledge of: Purpose and use of medical records and charts; a wide variety of medical terminology; hospital and medical records procedures; ICD-9-CM International Classification of Diseases; JCAHO standards and Title 22, OBRA, HIPAA and State requirements as they relate to medical records; correctional health standards; grammar, punctuation and spelling; the proper form for business correspondence.
Skill/Ability to: maintain general office and medical records; compile and prepare reports; extract medical information from patient's charts; enter data; operate office equipment such as computers, calculators and copy machines; and code using ICD-9 and CPT coding systems.
