Description
Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy Services, is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the activities of drug distribution and clinical functions of the Medical Center Department of Pharmacy Services.
- OR - Administers all general services provided by the Department of Pharmacy Services; supervises and coordinates the activities of drug procurement, supply and distribution to VMC and outlying facilities; and supervises drug distribution functions within outlying facilities. Board Certification in Psychopharmacy perferred.

Employment Standards
- Develops and implements policies and procedures relating to activities falling within the responsibility of the VMC Department of Pharmacy Services.
- Instructs, trains and supervises a staff of pharmacists, technicians and other supportive personnel engaged in the procurement, manufacture, packaging, labeling and distribution of medications, solutions and preparations.
- Promotes professional development within the staff.
- Provides supervision of employees engaged in receiving, handling and recording drugs, solutions and supplies.
- Assists the Director in personnel selection and evaluation.
- Assists the Director in development and maintenance of the hospital formulary.
- Assumes overall responsibility for the Department of Pharmacy Services in absence of the Director of Pharmacy Services.
- Works cooperatively with all associates and maintains good interpersonal and intra-and interdepartmental relationships.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergency situations.
- AND - - Assumes responsibility for supervision of inpatient and outpatient drug distribution of pharmaceuticals at VMC.
- Develops and supervises, in cooperation with the medical staff, clinical and academic pharmacy programs for VMC.
- Assumes primary responsibility for proper inventory of all drugs and supplies within Medical Center Pharmacy areas.
- OR - - Assumes responsibility for the proper inventory and accounting for all drugs
and supplies.
- Advises Purchasing Department of drug standards and specifications.
- Supervises the ordering, receipt and storage of drugs, solutions and chemicals.
- Determines cost per unit of items dispersed.
- Supervises the distribution of pharmaceuticals within the outlying clinics and other County institutions.
Physical Requirements
Possession of a valid license to practice as a pharmacist in the State of California and sufficient education, training and work experience to demonstrate possession of the following:
Experience Note: A candidate would normally acquire the knowledges and abilities listed below by attainment of a degree in Pharmacy, Masters preferred, from an accredited college of Pharmacy and at least three years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in an institutional setting. Some experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity or completion of an accredited residency in hospital pharmacy practice is desirable.

- Legislation governing hospital pharmacy services;
- Current literature in clinical pharmacy practice.

- Develop and actualize division goals, policies and procedures within a large teaching hospital;
- Organize, evaluate and direct the work of professional and supportive pharmacy personnel;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other departments;
- Prepare clear and comprehensive correspondence and reports;
