The Position
This recruitment is being conducted to establish a pool of extra-help employees to fill vacancies in the Sonoma County Regional Parks Department. Work locations may vary and work assignments include irregular hours, holidays, and weekends. Park Aides are required to purchase and wear a uniform. They receive a $156.00 Boot Voucher. Applicants must provide a copy of their DMV driving record at the time of their interview.
Under close supervision, Park Aides assist in routine park operations such as collecting day-use and camping fees; assisting park visitors; registering campers; explaining park rules; cleaning restrooms; and performing other maintenance and janitorial tasks as required. Training in park rules, procedures, and operations is provided.
Candidates should be available to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours. An applicant's flexibility in work days and work hours is highly desirable and may be a factor in hiring decisions.

IN ADDITION, THEY DO NOT RECEIVE MOST REGULAR EMPLOYEE BENEFITS SUCH AS: LONG-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE COVERAGE; ACCRUAL OF VACATION AND SICK LEAVE; PARTICIPATION IN THE COUNTY RETIREMENT PROGRAM; OR ELIGIBILITY TO TAKE PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS. EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYEES ARE LIMITED IN THEIR EMPLOYMENT TO A MAXIMUM OF 1,380 HOURS WITHIN ANY TWELVE-MONTH CONSECUTIVE PERIOD.
EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYEES WHO MEET THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS (GENERALLY WORKED 13 CONSECUTIVE PAY PERIODS WITH A MINIMUM OF 440 HOURS AND ARE SCHEDULED AT LEAST 40 HOURS PER PAY PERIOD) QUALIFY FOR A 50% COUNTY CONTRIBUTION TOWARD EMPLOYEE-ONLY KAISER HEALTH PLAN. DEPENDENT COVERAGE IS ALSO AVAILABLE AT EMPLOYEE'S COST.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: The ability to read and write English and make basic arithmetic calculations at a level for successful job performance is required. Current enrollment in a college or university with major course work emphasis in park management, natural resources, forestry, environmental studies or closely related field would be helpful.
Experience: Any experience that directly relates to the above abilities. Normally, experience in public contact, janitorial and/or physical manual labor would provide such an opportunity.
Special Qualifications: Possession of a valid American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care card is desirable.
License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position. Applicants must bring a copy of their DMV driving record to submit at the time of their interview.
Knowledge and Abilities
Some knowledge of basic janitorial techniques.
Ability to: Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation; follow oral and written instructions; use hand tools and light machines; perform moderately heavy physical manual labor; detect safety hazards within a park area and report problems to the supervisor; prepare a simple record of daily fees on a standardized form; deal effectively and tactfully with the public and county personnel; tactfully enforce rules, regulations, laws, and ordinances; safely drive and operate light motorized vehicles; work during weekdays, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours; and wear a uniform.
Selection Procedure
This selection procedure will consist of the following examination:
An application and supplemental questionnaire appraisal (weight 100%). Each application will be thoroughly evaluated for satisfaction of minimum qualifications and relevance of educational course work, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to these positions. Candidates possessing the most appropriate job-related qualifications will be placed on a temporary employment list and referred to Sonoma County Regional Parks for consideration.
A background investigation is required prior to appointment to regular positions and some temporary jobs. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation. Failure to sign prescribed forms will result in the candidate not being considered further for that vacancy. Background information obtained from reference checks will not be made available to candidates. Additionally, a medical examination, including a drug and alcohol screening, will be required prior to employment.
