Job Information

Under general supervision, to supervise an assigned squad of law enforcement officers and related personnel in crime prevention and law enforcement; and to perform related work.

Minimum Requirements

You must meet the following requirements by the last date to apply unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options by the last date to apply:

  1. 60 semester/90 quarter units from a P.O.S.T. approved or   accredited college/university.
  2. California Intermediate P.O.S.T. Certificate
EXPERIENCE:  Four years of full-time paid experience as a sworn peace officer with a City Police, County Sheriff, or State Highway Patrol agency within the State of California.  A minimum of two years of the experience must have been with the San Diego Police Department.  NOTE:  Time served in a training capacity as part of a Police Academy does NOT count toward meeting the experience requirement.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (MUST SUBMIT WITH APPLICATION):
  • College transcripts/proof of degree or P.O.S.T. Certificate. 

Screening Process

 

The screening process will consist of a written test, a structured interview and a calculation

WRITTEN TEST: A written test preparation guide will be available on the San Diego Police Department’s Intranet on Monday, September 28, 2011.  The written test will consist of the following factors:  Knowledge of Police Department Procedures; Knowledge of the California Penal Code; Community Policing; and Training Bulletins.

Source Material: The source material listed below is considered the "governing body of knowledge" for the written examination and thus dictates the correct answer for a given item. Common practice, knowledge or other sources are not relevant to the examination. San Diego Police Department Policies (will not be responsible for material published after July 16, 2011); San Diego Police Department Training Bulletins (those contained on the study disk); San Diego Police Department Procedures (will not be responsible for material published after July 16, 2011); San Diego Police Department Inspections Guide; San Diego Police Department Orders (those contained on the study disk); Public Safety Officers Procedural Bill of Rights; "A Practical Guide to Intelligence-Led Policing" (New Jersey State Police); "Good to Great" Policing: Training Pamphlet (Published by the COPS Office); "Problem Analysis in Policing" (Published by the COPS Office); "A guide to Reducing Crime and Disorder through Problem Solving Partnerships (Published by the COPS Office); "The Leadership Challenge (Fourth Edition) by Kouzes and Posner; and "Becoming an Exemplary Peace Officer" – The Guide to Ethical Decision Making by Michael Josephson (Published by the Josephson Institute).

Written Test Date: Saturday, November 7, 2011. Applicants will be notified by mail regarding the specific time and location.

Item Review Period: The written test key will be available for review by candidates who complete the written test. The item review period will be held on the following dates: Monday, November 9; Tuesday, November 10; Thursday, November 12; Friday, November 13 and Monday November 16, 2011. Candidates will be notified of the Item Review hours and location at the time of the Written Test.

INTERVIEW: Candidates who are successful on the Written Test will be scheduled for an interview which will be conducted by external raters from other police agencies. Factors assessed will include the following factors: ability to make a decision; ability to exercise appropriate judgment to routine supervisory situations and emergency incidents; ability to lead through example and action, rather than just responding to problems as a supervisor; ability to function as a positive role model for subordinate personnel; ability to consider the facts, objectively look at possible courses of action, identify and assimilate relevant data and make appropriate decisions/choices based on available information without being influenced by personal feelings or pre-established biases; ability to perform well and to maintain a professional demeanor when confronted with pressure situations; ability to remain open to new ideas, approaches or techniques and modify plans as needed after making a decision; ability to present a positive image for the department to the public and allied agencies; ability to communicate verbally on a one-to-one and group basis to provide and/or solicit information; ability to set priorities, organize, coordinate, schedule and monitor activities in order to maximize personnel, resources, and accomplish work within deadlines.

SERVICE CREDITS:  Candidates who are successful on the written test and interview will be given 1/2 point for every year of service after 8 years as a Police Officer II, with a maximum total of 5 points.  Points will only be awarded for full years of service.  Points will not be awarded for partial years of service.

If warranted and administratively feasible, an alternate test date may be considered.

Supplemental Information

Candidates who are successful in the screening process described above will be placed on a thirty-one category eligible list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next two years.

Each candidate’s final score will be based on their scores for all components of the examination which will be weighted as follows: Written Test - 45%; Interview - 50%; and Service Credit Points - 5%.
