Job Description
- The Michigan Civil Service Commission is Accepting Applications for theEntry-Level Corrections Officer Examination
This examination tests for the following classification.Corrections Officer 8Employees in this job oversee and participate in the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners in correctional facilities including major institutions, camps, and correction centers. Required Education and Experience
- Completion of 15 semester/23 term college credits in one or a combination of the following areas: correctional administration, criminal justice, criminology, psychology, social work, sociology, counseling and guidance, educational psychology, family relations, pastoral counseling, or law enforcement.

This examination consists of three test sections of video questions to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities critical to security positions. Because this is a video test, there will be no late admissions. You must achieve passing scores on all three sections to pass. Applicants may retake this exam after a six-month period.SectionTimeSection 1: Human Interaction1 hour and 20 minutesSection 2: Reading Comprehension15 minutesSection 3: Incident Observation Report Writing30 minutesThere are testing waivers if you possess specific college credits, a bachelor’s degree, military service, and/or former corrections security training and experience. The Michigan Civil Service Commission will determine if an applicant can waive testing based on the information attached to the submission.IF YOU:YOU MUST:YOU CAN:Have completed 15 semester/23 term qualifying college credits.Submit a photocopy of your official college transcript with your Civil Service application.Take the test.Have completed 30 semester/45 term college credits in any field.Submit a photocopy of your official college transcript with your Civil Service application.Take the test.Possess a bachelor’s degree with a major in any field of study.Submit a photocopy of your official college transcript with the application.Waive Video Exam; your name is placed directly in Corrections Officer 8 applicant pool.Have completed a recognized corrections training program in another state or federal jurisdiction and completed at least two years of full-time corrections officer work experience and are currently employed satisfactorily in a corrections position or left corrections employment in satisfactory status.Submit a photocopy of your corrections training certificate with your Civil Service application and documentation to support satisfactory status.Waive Video Exam; your name is placed directly in Corrections Officer 8 applicant pool.Have completed 15 semester/23 term qualifying college credit hours or 30 semester/45 term college credits in any field and have two years active duty with an honorable discharge from any branch of the military.Submit photocopy of your official college transcript(s) with the college seal or registrar’s signature (Internet or student transcripts will not be accepted) and DD-214-Member 4 Copy (active duty), NGB-22-Individual Copy 2 (National Guard), and/or discharge certificate (all other military reserve duty) for each tour of service along with the application.Waive Video Exam; your name is placed directly in Corrections Officer 8 applicant pool.Are currently in any branch of the military or military reserve and completed 15 semester/23 term qualifying college credits or 30 semester/45 term college credits in any field.Submit photocopy of your official college transcript(s) with the college seal or registrar’s signature (internet or student transcripts will not be accepted) and verification from the military branch in which you are currently serving. If you served in more than one tour of service, you must submit your DD-214-Member 4 Copy (active duty), NGB-22-Individual Copy 2 (National Guard), or discharge certificate (all other military reserve duty) for each tour along with the application.Waive Video Exam; your name is placed directly in Corrections Officer 8 applicant pool.Submissions must be received by the first day of each month to be scheduled for testing the following month. Two to three weeks before the examination date, applicants will receive an Examination Admission Notice with the test date, time, and location. The examination will be administered during the weekday, in Detroit, Ironwood, Lansing, Marquette, and Sault Sainte Marie (as needed). Applicants must be at the examination center at least 15 minutes before the examination time and bring: two pieces of identification with signatures, one must have a photo, and sharpened No. 2 pencils. Applicants unable to take the test on the scheduled date and location can telephone or email to be rescheduled for another location in this testing cycle. Current state employees should contact their department’s Office of Human Resources for their policy on administrative leave to take Civil Service examinations.

- MCSC Examinations - Veterans Preference for Tested Classes - If you have already submitted your documents for Veterans' Preference, there is no need to attach and submit this information again. However if you have not applied, Civil Service Rule 3-8, Veterans' Preference, states that a veteran or a qualifying spouse who possesses the minimum qualifications for the classification may be eligible for preference in consideration during the selection process for hire into the classified service. In order to receive veterans' preference, registration with the Michigan Civil Service Commission is required. Once registered, in order to compete for State of Michigan vacancies, you must go to the Civil Service vacancy postings webpage and apply as instructed for any given vacancy. If you have not registered, you must apply for Veterans' Preference with the Michigan Civil Service Commission before the end of the application process. Note: An applicant who is granted Veterans' Preference is not guaranteed an interview or an appointment. An eligible veteran is a person who (1) has 90 or more calendar days of active duty service in the Armed Forces of the United States and (2) was honorably discharged from active duty in the Armed Forces for the United States. Official military forms must be from the United States Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) and/or Department of Defense (DOD). You must meet one of the following in order to be provided with the veterans' preference. If you feel you qualify please select one and provide the required documentation.
