Basic Function & Scope of Job

The Desktop Systems Administrator functions as a member of the ETS Infrastructure Team.  Reporting to the Manager of IT Infrastructure, Operations and Architecture, this role will take primary leadership and technical direction from the Senior Desktop Systems Administrator.  Using technical standards, processes and architectural approach defined by the Senior Desktop Systems Administrator, this role will focus both on implementing project-based changes and improvements, as well as function as “third-level” technical support for the GGU Help Desk and technical support operation.

Essential Functions


  • Microsoft Desktop application support.
     
  • Enterprise Desktop configuration and security management.
     
  • Application packaging, policy enforcement, systems auditing, and asset management
     
  • PDA administration and support.
     

·        VMware VDI (Thin-client) administration and support. 



  • Security Administration, including desktop, network, policy and physical access enforcement for IT assets and applications.
     
  • Network Administration, including basic knowledge of VLANs, basic network routing, desktop and enterprise firewalls, DHCP and DNS administration.
     
  • Server Systems Administration.  Operates a 95+% Linux server infrastructure.  Basic Unix/Linux skills are required to function as a member of the team. 
     

Qualifications, Education & Experience

Qualifications:

 

The candidate should be comfortable and experienced with current operating systems, platforms and technologies, and with modern methods of help desk/support operations, including remote desktop control, desktop and network security, centralized monitoring, patch management and security best-practices. The candidate should have experience working in medium-sized to large IT departments, and working with a diverse range of administrators, engineers and developers. The candidate should have demonstrated experience creating process-based IT solutions that are implemented across teams of IT professionals.

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

 


  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Enterprise Support Technician (MCITP)
     
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
     
  • CompTIA A+
     
  • CompTIA Network+
     
  • MS Windows desktop support
     
  • Novell client, file & print services
     
  • Novell eDirectory
     
  • Novell Zenworks and/or other patch management products
     
  • Application packaging and enteprise desktop systems management (MSI configurations, LanDesk, Zenworks, SMS or similar applications)
     
  • Support ticketing systems, including best-practices for ticket-based collaboration in multi-tiered support/project environments
     
  • Structured Change Control processes
     
  • Technical documentation authoring for systems administration
     

 

Additional Skills:

 


  • Ability to learn how to function in an IT server environment that is nearly 100% virtualized using VMware technologies.
     
  • Experience working in IT organizations that have multi-tiered technical operations supporting large numbers of customers.
     
  • Experience balancing strategic, long-term project work with imperative, short-term administration and support activities.
     
  • 2+ years hands-on experience managing large PC installation bases (greater than 500 systems) using enterprise-class desktop systems management software (such as Microsoft SMS, Altiris LanDesk, Novell Zenworks, or similar applications.)  
     
  • Hands-on experience managing large PC installation bases (greater than 500 systems) with centralized security, asset management, logging and configuration management tools and applications.
     
  • Practical experience managing applications, resources, systems and data with LDAP directories such as MS Active Directory, Novell eDirectory or OpenLDAP.
     
  • A background working in sophisticated, service-management savvy technology environments which utilize ITIL-based best practices, Change Management, SDLC workflows and structured Project Management.
     

·        Practical experience working in a matrixed-management professional environment, where technical leadership is provided by multiple people, and collaboration often occurs across technical teams and departments.


  • Strong English speaking and writing skills.
     
  • Personal organizational skills, self-reliance and determination, and proficiency with a broad-range of technologies.
     

 

Education and/or Experience:                                            

 


  • An undergraduate BA or BS (or international equivalent) degree is required.
     
  • Graduate degree attained or in progress preferred.
     
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in enterprise-class Desktop Systems management and administration roles.
     
  • A minimum or 5 years of IT professional experience.
