Description
Performs responsible clerical work in the technical services and public service areas of the public library; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Limited supervision may be exercised over volunteers.
Examples of Duties
Assisting customers; operating public service areas; registering customers; shelving books; checking books in and out of library; collecting fees and fines; responding to questions from customers.
- Greets patrons; charges and discharges library materials; sorts returned materials; places books on hold.
- Ensures transactions are recorded correctly; examines returned materials for damage; assesses customer if applicable; makes minor repairs or forwards materials requiring external repairs.
- Assists patrons with on-line catalog use; helps patrons find library resources; helps patrons fill out forms.
- Oversees volunteers.
- Recommends program materials; pulls materials for outreach programs; assists with setting up displays and decorating library.
- Notifies patrons when requested materials are available.
- Collects money; prepares cash report; issues receipts.
- Processes library memberships; explains library policies.
- Receives and directs incoming calls; responds to questions in person, by phone or e-mail.
- Maintains an awareness of all materials and information available to the public; monitors library activity; assists patrons with use of computers, etc.
- Shelves library materials; straightens shelves; empties drop box of returned library materials.
- Enters a variety of information into computer system; sends out overdue notices; prepares various statistical reports.
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Typical Qualifications
Some knowledge of library operations; general knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; ability to perform library tasks and to adhere to prescribed routines; ability to perform routine clerical tasks; ability to operate standard office and computer equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and customers.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with some customer service experience.Must have a valid driver’s license appropriate for the state of North Carolina.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, fingering, feeling, grasping; and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, and to determine accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work; and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
