Description
- Performs advanced journey level work in the maintenance and repair of water and wastewater process equipment, lift stations, and well site equipment.
Examples of Duties
- Acts as a lead mechanic at a water treatment plant, lift station or well site.
- Performs troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of all types of valves, pumps, and equipment including electric and hydraulic valves, blowers and fans.
- Installs new or replacement equipment including leveling, adjusting, alignment and wiring.
- Schedules and performs preventative maintenance such as greasing, oil changes, re-packing or replacing bearings or seals, and chain or gear adjustments.
- Operates various equipment related to mechanical maintenance such as presses, welders, lathes, milling equipment, grinders, drills, cutting torches and hand and power tools.
- Operates a boom truck to install or remove plant equipment.
- Fabricates and welds plant upgrades such as stairs, railings, tank installation, plumbing and piping.
- May design or redesign plant improvements including process control, electrical, mechanical and plumbing equipment.
- Purchases and installs new equipment or components to upgrade, modify, or improve existing equipment.
- Trains and provides lead supervision to Technician 1 and Service Workers; implements a one year long comprehensive training program for new technicians.
- Researches and orders materials, maintenance supplies, and new equipment from outside vendors; maintains parts inventory and equipment information.
- Performs other basic building maintenance such as painting, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Special Requirements
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:Knowledge of:Methods, materials, equipment and practices of mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair.Water and wastewater treatment processes.The operation, maintenance and repair of all types of pumps, motors, valves, gear assemblies and bearings.The operation of control systems (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical).Welding and mechanical parts fabrication.Ability to:Provide lead supervision and training for plant maintenance staff.Operate all tools and equipment used in mechanical maintenance.Read and interpret mechanical or electrical drawings and manufacturer's product information.WORKING CONDITIONS:Bending, crawling, climbing, and heavy lifting of equipment is frequently required.Hazardous materials such as chlorine gas, caustic soda, high voltage, and bacteriological hazards are often present. Moving mechanical parts and equipment present safety hazards.Operate heavy equipment as required. Move heavy objects over 50 lbs., work at heights greater than 10 feet.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High school education supplemented by one year of technical training in mechanical or plant maintenance and 3 years of experience in the maintenance of processing facilities, including 1 year of lead supervision.Any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, is qualifying.

- SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:A valid Arizona driver's license. Subject to call back after normal hours.Some positions may require a commercial driver’s license with hazardous materials endorsement, within 90 from the date of hire.Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.Possession of Grade 1 Water or Wastewater certificate within six months of hire.
