Job Summary/Scope

Job Summary
Supervises daily work activities of commissioned officers and civilians assigned to a specific shift or division. Ensures officers and civilians comply with Department policies and regulations. Coordinates the use of staff and resources in the department. Assists in criminal investigations.
 
Job Scope
Plans, organizes and controls the work of assigned employees. Direct supervisory responsibilities. Some budgetary responsibilities.
 

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1.      RESPONDS to all major calls, and DIRECTS the activities of subordinates. RESPONDS to routine calls, as necessary.
2.      Determines needs for further training of officers.
3.      ASSISTS employees with problem resolution.
4.      EVALUATES and REVIEWS reports and work of subordinates. COUNSELS on job performance.
5.      PROVIDES information on daily workings of the agency.
6.      RECEIVES citizen complaints and RESOLVES when possible.
7.      REVIEWS and FOLLOWS UP on case assignments.
8.      ASSISTS in case problem solving and investigative work.
9.      ASSISTS officers at crime scenes.
 
Other Duties and Responsibilities
1.      CONDUCTS roll call and roll call training
2.      INSPECTS officers and equipment daily
3.      PERFORMS all other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abililites, Materials & Equipment, Working Environment

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1.      Minimum of five years departmental seniority required.
2.      Firearms qualification required.
3.      Valid driver’s license required.
4.      Skills in problem solving, supervision and management, report writing; handling weapons, interacting with people; and written and oral communications.
5.      Knowledge of criminal, constitutional, and traffic law.
6.      Knowledge of City and State laws.
7.      Knowledge of leadership methods and department policies and procedures.
8.      Must be able to establish and achieve reasonable goals.
9.      Work is performed under stressful situations; requires physical strength and ability to restrain others.
10. Ability to exercise good judgment under stress and lead and motivate subordinates.
11. Ability to deal effectively with the public, fulfill duties of subordinates, and assume command in the absence of ranking officers.
12. Daily operation of police vehicles.
13. Some familiarity with operation of computers.
14. Certified Missouri peace officer.
 

Education

Materials and Equipment Directly Used
Operates police vehicles, handles police weapons such as sidearm, shotgun, handcuffs, pepper mace, baton and other related equipment. Frequent operation of computers, telephone and other related office management or investigative tools and equipment. Drives police vehicle.
