Description of Work

Correctional Officer is an entry level position for those seeking a career in correctional security and other public safety fields.  The North Carolina prison system regularly accepts applications for prison locations statewide.

Correctional Officers are responsible for overseeing offenders sentenced to serve time in a prison facility.  Correctional Officers maintain security within the prison which includes preventing disturbances, assaults and escapes.  Correctional Officers maintain order and enforce rules within the institution.


Work Schedule:


Prisons are staffed 24-hours, 7 days a week.  Shift assignments can include days, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Correctional Officers must:

·         Effectively communicate with inmates, staff and members of the general public.

·         Perform searches of persons, places, and objects. 

·         Respond at any time to emergency calls. 

·         Conduct continuous visual & audio surveillance of inmates, both indoor & outdoor.

·         Transport inmates in departmental vehicles at any time, day or night, in any weather, traffic or road condition.

·         Perform rescue functions to include CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas and using firefighting equipment to include fire hoses, extinguishers & breathing apparatus.

·         Establish & maintain control of violent or uncooperative inmates. 

·         Defend oneself or others against violent attack.

·         Work assigned post which will include extended standing, walking, climbing stairs & exposure to elements.

·         Apprehend escaped/fleeing inmates to include running, jumping, climbing, crawling using reasonable physical force to include deadly force. Load, unload, aim & fire handguns, shotguns, & rifles at the level of proficiency required.

·         Conduct accurate count of persons and distinguish between color coded emergency signals, keys, safety signs, and clothing.

·         Comprehend & abide by policies/directives.

Correctional Officers are provided extensive formal training to learn the skills required for the job.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Must be eligible for criminal justice certification. Individuals with two year or four year degree encouraged to apply.

Applicants should apply to the Correctional Officer vacancy assigned to their home county. This vacancy is only for applicants living in the Piedmont Region of the state (see list below of counties serviced by the Piedmont Triad Regional Employment Office).  Only one application is required to be considered for any prison across the state.  Later in the screening process applicants will select the prison(s) where they would like to work.

 

Applicants living outside of the state of North Carolina must apply to the Department of Public Safety HR office in the region they are seeking employment. This will not limit where you can work. Later in the application process you will be able to expand your selection of prison locations. 

The Piedmont Triad Regional Employment Office (PTREO) accepts Correctional Officer applications from in-state residents of the counties listed below. The PTREO accepts applications from out-of-state applicants whose primary interest is in working in one of the counties listed below.

Current Department of Public Safety (DPS) Correctional Officers should NOT apply to this vacancy listing.  Current DPS Correctional Officers requesting a transfer should apply to the CO Transfer posting for the region in which they live???? On your application indicate the prison you are interested in.

Correctional Officers are certified by North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards. To be eligible for Criminal Justice certification an applicant must be:

  • Twenty years old,
  • A U.S. citizen and
  • Have an acceptable High school diploma or GED.  High school diplomas from correspondence schools and most on-line schools are not acceptable.  High school diplomas from home schools in certain states such as South Carolina, xx, xx are not accepted. PUT LINK TO DEFINITION???? ADMIN CODE???

As a gun-carrying, Criminal Justice certified officer; Correctional Officer applicants must undergo a background investigation. Disqualifying factors in the background process include: 

  • Certain misdemeanor convictions, (PUT LINK HERE).
  • Felony convictions,
  • Domestic violence XXXX, or
  • Military conduct similar to the disqualifying misdemeanor or felony convictions. 

Applicants with military experience must submit an undeleted copy of the DD-214, Report of Separation (long form) as part of the background investigation process. You may scan and attach your DD-214 to your application. Or, you may mail or fax your DD-214 within 30 days of your application to the Piedmont Triad Regional Employment Office (PTREO) at the address below. ?????
