General Information
KIND OF WORK: This is general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances
Requirements
- EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Patrols in a designated area of the City on foot, in a patrol boat, on a radio-equipped motorcycle, or in an audio-equipped car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic and to enforce motor vehicle operation and parking regulations; answers calls and complaints involving fire, automobile accidents, robberies, neighborhood disturbances and other misdemeanors and felonies; secures the scene of crime, obtains witnesses and makes arrests; testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests and citations made; administers first aid at the scene of automobile accidents; interviews witnesses, gathers information and prepares detailed reports; interviews persons with complaints and inquiries and attempts to make proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities; gives advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public; attends regular training classes in police methods, first aid, target practice and related subjects; keeps informed with respect to persons of known bad character and places of questionable legality within an assigned area; transfers prisoners; serves warrants, subpoenas and other legal notices; operates radar unit in enforcing traffic laws; issues traffic citations; fills out traffic accident and criminal offense reports; escorts funerals, wide loads and mobile homes; assists in the docket room or in the court; gathers statistics on accidents and violations; when assigned to the juvenile division, works with delinquency problems; performs related work as required.
Description
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, preferably supplemented by college level course work in criminal justice or law enforcement, and preferably some experience dealing with the public under varying circumstances; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

- ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures with ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations; some knowledge of the geography of the City and the location of important buildings or ability to acquire this knowledge rapidly; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public; ability to obtain a motor vehicle operator's license; ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
