Job Information

THIS JOB REQUIRES MULTI-TASKING SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO MAKE QUICK DECISIONS.

Dispatcher I positions work in the Police, Fire-Rescue and General Services Departments.

Police and Fire-Rescue Department Dispatchers work on a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and are the primary answering points for all 9111 and non-emergency phone calls from within the City of San Diego.  Dispatchers must determine the nature and extent of the request, the priority of the problem and the need for dispatching police, fire or medical field units.  The appropriate information is entered into the CAD systems and transmitted to a Radio Dispatcher.

Police Department Dispatchers work 10 hours per shift, 4 days a week,with 3 consecutive days off.  Fire-Rescue Department Dispatchers work 12 hour shifts (44/36 rotation schedule).

Dispatcher I positions will be rotated to different shifts on a periodic basis.  Dispatcher I positions may answer 50-170 calls a day are are required to sit for long periods of time.

General Services Department (Streets Division) Dispatchers receive incoming phone calls and operate radio communications equipment to dispatch and coordinate various City units involved in servicing, maintaining or repairing City property, services or facilities.

Minimum Requirements

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION:  Graduation from high school OR passage of the California High School Proficiency Examination OR GED.

CITIZENSHIP:  United States citizenship or the legal right to work in the United States.

Screening Process

The screening process will consist of the following components:
 
1.   APPLICATION REVIEW: Applications will be evaluated to ensure they meet the minimum requirements.  Only those applicants who clearly demonstrate meeting the requirements specified above will be approved to continue in the screening process.
 
2.   PERFORMANCE TESTThe Performance Test is a computer based work simulation test that measures the general aptitudes needed to be a Dispatcher.  No prior dispatch experience is necessary to pass the test which includes the following 15 test modules: 
·         Priorization: Ability to evaluate and analllyze information in order to pioritize or categorize incidents.
·                             Data Entry: Ability to read written data and accurately enter that data using a keyboard.
·         Data Entry (Audio): Ability to hear audible data and accurately enter that data using a keyboard.
·         Call Summarization 1: Ability to hear, comprehend, and summarize audible information.
·         Call Summarization 2: Ability to heat and comprehend audible information while accurately entering that information using a keyboard, and to subsequently use that information.
·         Cross Referencing: Ability to locate information, requested in writing, on a written list and to correctly/accurately respond using a keyboard.
·         Cross Referencing (Audio): Ability to locate information, requested audibly, on a written list and to correctly/accurately respond using a keyboard.
·         Character Comparison: Ability to compare and contrast written data.
·         Memory Recall: Ability to learn and later recognize associated information.
·         Memory Recall - Numeric (Audio): Ability to hear data (number sequences), memorize it, and then use a keyboard.
·         Spelling: Ability to correctly spell words according to the context in which they are being used (i.e., homonyms).
 
·             Map Reading: Ability to use maps for determining routes and locations.
·            Sentence Clarity: Ability to select the writen passage that is the nost clearly written.
·            Reading Comprehension: Ability to read and comprehend written passages.
·            Decison Making: Ability to make decisions quickly and accurately and to correctly signal the response using a computer.

You must pass all 15 test modules in order to pass the test.
 
TEST WEIGHT: 60%
 
WRITTEN TEST DATE: Approved applicants will be notified by mail regarding the specific date, time and location of the written test. You must have a Written Test  Appointment Notice in order to be admitted to the test.
3.   INTERVIEW: The Interview may include, but is not limited to the following factors:
·         Evaluation of training, education and experience
·         Decision making
·         Interpersonal skills
·         Communication skills
             
              TEST WEIGHT: 40%
 
INTERVIEW DATE: Individuals who pass the performance test will be scheduled and notified of the specific date, time and location for the interview.

Supplemental Information

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTSEmployment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes that are applicable to this job, which may include but are not limited to the following:  confirmation of citizenship/legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review/exam (which may include drug alcohol testing); reference checks; and a fingerprint check.  The fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and/or the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report.  Certain positions may require additional screening processes which may include a polygraph examination and/or background investigation.  All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.  A positive test for alcohol, illegal drugs or inadequately explained prescription drugs, misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening/selection process may be cause for disqualification and/or termination of employment.   Nothing in this job posting constitutes an expressed or implied contract for employment with the City of San Diego.
