A person hired for a temporary position may also become a temporary employee upon satisfactory completion of the initial probation period of at least six months. Once a temporary employee, you would be eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits as afforded to an employee in a permanent position, with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

Examples of Duties

Summary:
Performs routine manual work in a school cafeteria for the preparation and serving of school meals and snacks; cleans kitchen appliances, utensils and serving counters; oversees the work of student helpers and monitors; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This class differs from that of classes in the Kitchen Helper series in that the Cafeteria Helper performs work in a school cafeteria serving mainly hot lunches; classes in the Kitchen Helper series perform work in an institution or hospital kitchen serving three main meals daily.

This class differs from that of Cook I in that the Cafeteria Helper is primarily involved in the performance of routine work for the preparation and serving of school meals and snacks, including the maintenance of work areas, equipment and utensils in clean and orderly condition, which may include cooking starches or other similar simple food items; the Cook I is primarily involved in the cooking of principal meal items as a regular and continuous work assignment in assisting others in cooking at a cooking station in a school cafeteria, hospital or institutional kitchen.

No specific education or experience required.
