Essential Functions
To perform progressively more skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation, computer process control, and electrical equipment and systems.
Job Summary
Job content can involve assembling, installing, maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting and repairing and/or replacing electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, digital and analog control equipment and systems; operating, maintaining, calibrating and repairing pneumatic and electronic testing and measuring instruments; maintaining records and preparing reports on maintenance and repair work, calibration readings and related data; ordering parts, supplies, and equipment; instructing lower level classes in the series; reading, interpreting and preparing schematic diagrams, blueprints, sketches and equipment specifications; performing math calculations related to the trades; driving to and performing inspections on new construction; maintaining shop area; and performing related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
A valid California Class C driver's license -AND-
For ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE I, no
experience or course work.
For ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE II, two
years of experience in the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County performing the duties of an Electrical & Instrumentation Technician Apprentice I or equivalent.
For ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN, four years of experience in the Electrical & Instrumentation Technician Apprentice classes with the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County performing progressively responsible installation, maintenance and repair work on instrumentation, computer process control and electrical equipment and systems.
Candidates for either the Apprentice II or journey level may substitute the following:Twelve units of college course work, approved by the Districts, or completion of one year of a two-year degree or certification program in instrumentation, electronics or electrical technology, or a closely related field for one year of the required experience -OR- Completion of a two-year degree or certification program in instrumentation, electronics or electrical technology, or a
closely related field for two years of the required experience.Examples of Assessment Criteria
Knowledge of:
ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE I: Basic hand and power tools, materials, terminology, basic math concepts and safety considerations of the trade.
ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE II: Theories, principles, practices, tools, math calculations and safety considerations used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, digital and
analog control equipment and systems.
ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN: Theories, principles,
practices, tools, math formulas and safety considerations used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, digital and analog control
equipment and systems; plant operational system.
Ability to:
ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE I: Follow
technical directions; learn the theories, principles, practices, tools, math calculations and safety considerations used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, digital and analog control equipment and systems.
ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE II: Work with increasing independence; utilize specialized tools, math formulas and equipment of the trade; perform troubleshooting and repair work involving electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, digital and analog control equipment and systems; read and interpret schematic diagrams, blueprints, sketches and equipment specifications; instruct lower level apprentices in trade techniques.
ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN: Utilize specialized tools, math formulas and equipment of the trade; independently troubleshoot and repair electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, digital and analog control equipment and systems; read, interpret and prepare schematic diagrams, blueprints, sketches and equipment specifications; maintain records and prepare reports; independently perform difficult assignments; instruct lower level apprentices in trade techniques.
