Description

Under close supervision, the Service Worker performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in servicing and cleaning light rail cars, VTA vehicles, and related equipment.

Examples of Duties

• Cleans interior and exterior of rail cars or VTA vehicles by washing and steam cleaning, using a variety of solvents, soaps, and cleaning chemicals;
•Checks general condition of rail cars or VTA vehicles while performing duties to detect and report to supervisor defects, such as tires, defective lights, body damage, interior damage, and operating defects, fluid leaks, battery odor, defective running gear; i.e., engines, transmissions, and other problems as may be directed in work instructions;
• Services pantographs, wheels, axles, connectors, and other parts of the rail cars;
• Checks quantity of and dispenses fuel, lubricants, coolant, and water to a variety of automotive equipment;
• Posts, adds, and subtracts the amounts of commodities used;
• Moves rail cars around the yard;
• Moves VTA vehicles around yard for fueling and related servicing; may take coach exchanges in the field as directed;
• Removes debris from the rail cars or buses;
• Checks and replenishes consumables;
• Replaces accessories, such as light bulbs, mirrors, wiper blades, etc;
• Couples and uncouples rail cars;
• Maintains shop facilities as instructed;
• Cleans and services shop equipment;
• Makes deliveries or picks up materials;
• Operates computer for related data input and retrieval;
• Performs related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

Possession of a valid California driver’s license and the ability to qualify for a Class B license and LRV operator certification.
Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and odd and unusual hours.

• Learn to operate light rail and other VTA vehicles in a safe manner;

• Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with those contacted in the course of business;
• Work under established deadlines.
