Job Summary

Sheriff’s Cadets attend and must successfully complete an intensive twenty-five week Law Enforcement Training Academy. Upon graduation, Sheriff’s Cadets will be promoted to Deputy Sheriffs and assigned to one of two bureaus: Court Services or Law Enforcement Services.

The examples of functions listed in the class specification(s) are representative but not necessarily exhaustive or descriptive of any one position in the class(es). Management is not precluded from assigning other related functions not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.

Essential Function:

Attends County of San Diego Sheriff's Academy, which includes classroom study and examinations in Communications, Criminal Investigations, Custody Procedures, Force and Weaponry, Law, Laws of Evidence, Patrol Procedures, Physical Fitness and Defense Techniques, Police Community Relations, Professional Orientation, Traffic and Vehicle Operations and related subjects.

a) Minimum age is 20-1/2 at time of exam; 21 at time of appointment;
b) U.S. high school diploma or GED certificate;
c) No felony convictions, not on probation; misdemeanors may be disqualifying depending on number, type, and recency;
d) Valid California class C driver’s license prior to appointment;
e) Valid picture I.D. (military, driver’s license, state I.D.)
f) Vision: 20/100 uncorrected; correctable to at least 20/30; or soft contact lenses correctable to 20/30 (subject to P.O.S.T. requirements);
g) U.S. citizen;
h) Effective oral and written communication skills in English.
Successful completion of a comprehensive Background Investigation, Computer Voice Stress Analysis Exam, Employment Interview, Psychological Examination and complete Medical Examination.

A WRITTEN EXAM, which includes vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension. There is a 2 ½ -hour time limit. (For details, see the attached examination information sheet.)
A PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST is given at a later date in the hiring process (see attached examination information sheet).
Exam Dates – Various dates and locations available, please refer to Sheriff's website listed below.
Applicants must check in prior to exam with valid photo I.D. and a #2 pencil. Applicants with the highest scores will be invited to an orientation meeting that will provide an overview of the hiring process, and a presentation from Academy Staff.
The POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Exam will be used as the pre-employment exam. A study guide is available at the www.joinsdsheriff.net website.
