JOB TITLE: Police Officer Probationary
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Police Department/Public Safety
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision enforces laws and ordinances, maintains order,
prevents crime, makes arrests, and does related work as required
Duties
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Represent the Department and the City of Bloomington through dedication to duty and to public service.
Officers will have thorough knowledge and understanding of all of the Department's Operational General Orders,
Will have attained the rank of Officer First Class after satisfactorily completing the probationary period of employment and upon approval from the Bloomington Board of Public Safety.
Probationary Officers are trainees and are expected to exhibit increasing knowledge of the job during their probationary period. They are also
required to successfully complete the Bloomington Police Department’s Field Training Program as prescribed by its guidelines.
Probationary Officers are required to meet the minimum standards of performance as set by their immediate supervisor(s).
Job Requirements
At The Time of Application
Must be at least 21 years of age and not more than 40 years of age, or less than 40 years and six months if the applicant is a veteran with 20 years of armed forces service, at the time of appointment.
Must be a high school graduate (G.E.D. is acceptable). A college degree is preferred.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must successfully pass a general aptitude test and physical agility test.
Must submit to a truth verification examination, and be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
Must submit to an oral interview before a Hiring Board for the purpose of determining the applicant's ability to communicate, their individual experience, and relevant background information.
Employment Requirements
Successful applicants must pass a psychological screening and physical examination performed by a licensed physician, chosen by the Police Pension Board.
Be accepted into the 1977 Police Officers' and Firefighters' Retirement Fund.
Must pass the physical fitness standards of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
Must meet and maintain the physical standards of the Bloomington Police Department throughout employment.

Starting Salary:Probationary Officers (First Year/Non-Certified) $63,683
Officer First Class/Certified Officers $68,184Hiring Bonus:
Lateral Transfer of Certified Police Officers $5,000
Probationary Police Officers $3,000Longevity: A member shall receive annual longevity pay at the rate of $200 per year of service.
Training: Officers shall receive training pay at the rate of $100 for every twenty (20) hours of training completed during the previous calendar year.
Retirement: The City shall contribute seventeen point five (17.5%) of the salary of a fully paid Officer First Class to the Public Employee Retirement Fund. The City shall also contribute four percent (4%) of the salary of a fully paid Officer First Class plus $5,000 to the Public Employees Retirement Fund on behalf of each police officer.Employees may contribute pre-taxed dollars to a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan account to supplement their retirement earnings.
Eligible employees receive 13 paid holidays per year.
Vacation: 29 days per year (prorated first year)
One additional day of vacation is added for each year of service between years 5 and 25. Maximum of fifty (50) vacation days per year.Sick Leave: Unlimited sick leave with full-pay, in accordance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Health, vision, and dental insurance premiums are subsidized by the City and are available on day one of employment to regular employees. The City offers life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment at no cost to employees. Employees may elect voluntary term life..
Housing Benefits:
Rental Assistance: $750/month benefit available to officers renting a residence inside the city limits of Bloomington upon start of employment.*
Housing Purchase Down Payment Program: Officers that purchase a home within the City limits will receive a $100,000 no-interest loan, paid over the course of 10 years, towards the purchase price of the home. At the conclusion of 10 years, officers will realize $100,000 in home equity.*
