Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Generally accepted accounting principles and procedures and their application to accounting transactions.
Principles, methods and procedures of governmental accounting, budgeting and financial management.
Standards for governmental accounting and financial reporting, as promulgated by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
End-user tools for financial data extraction, manipulation and reporting.
Modern office methods, practices, procedures and automation tools.
Ability to:
Analyze and interpret accounting records and accounting data.
Examine and verify financial documents and reports.
Prepare a variety of financial statements, reports and analysis.
Learn advanced concepts of governmental accounting principles and practices.
Learn grant management practices and specific grantor agency requirements.
Learn applications of automated financial management systems.
Learn City's automated budget system and processes.
Train, coach and consult with department customers in the use of financial systems and end-user data extraction and reporting tools.
Develop and implement accounting system modifications.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Some recent professional accounting experience; or one year related responsible paraprofessional experience.
Training:
Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or a closely related field.
Accountant II
In addition to the qualifications for Accountant I:
Knowledge of:
Advanced concepts of governmental accounting principles and practices, and standards for financial reporting.
Principles, methods, and procedures of governmental budgeting.
Advanced applications of automated financial management systems, including client-server technology.
Advanced applications of end-user tools for financial data extraction, manipulation and reporting.
Automated financial management systems.
Laws regulating public finance and fiscal operations.
Grant management practices and specific grantor agency requirements.
Ability to:
Train, coach and consult with department customers on advanced applications of financial systems and end-user data extraction and reporting tools.
Develop and implement accounting system modifications.
Experience and Training Guidelines

Experience:
Two years of professional accounting experience, preferably in a governmental accounting environment. Some supervisory or lead experience may be preferred.
