Essential Functions

Under general supervision, assists with the development and delivery of educational and recreational programs, which may include: sports, games, mini-excursions, competitive activities, contests and special events; complies and/or distributes program/activity descriptions, arts & crafts, program and/or game calendars, center class schedules, registration forms, volunteer applications, and other program information; requests all necessary supplies and materials; provides general center support, which may include answering telephones and providing customer service; supervises participants and activities at a recreation center, senior center, or park; opens and closes facility; collaborates with other part-time staff with the supervision of daily program activities; prepares promotional materials for programs/centers; compiles and submits monthly statistics, newsletters, and facility usage reports; addresses emergency/accident issues related to patrons and facilities; monitors center/facility reservations; assists in planning, organizing, promoting and conducting educational activities and/or programs for participants; compiles and maintains evaluation documentation on participants' progress; participates cooperatively in work team activities; may perform other duties depending on nature of assignment (some specialized assignments are listed below).

If assigned to Youth Sports: will also officiate basketball, baseball, and/or flag football games.

If assigned to Nature Center: will also assist with the implementation of nature educational activities including: nature walks, creek clean-ups, restoration projects, campouts, and related events.

Requirements

Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Possession and retention of a valid California Class C driver's license is a condition of employment. Experience supervising and motivating volunteers, participants, and peers, and the ability to deal professionally with customers of all ages; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

Knowledge of:  Strong recreation and sports programming background combined with educational techniques and customer service experience. Basic use of computers, including Microsoft Word and the Internet.
 
Ability to: be a positive role model; be creative and work with children and adults of all ages and backgrounds; understand and communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
 
Special Working Conditions: Must be willing and able to work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays and evenings, on an occasional basis, as a condition of employment.

Note: Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hmong, Korean, or Samoan is highly desirable.
