Position Description

This is first-level law enforcement supervisory work in the County Police Department.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for the supervision of a small work group or squad of police officers and/or others engaged in basic law enforcement and of related duties. Areas of assignment may include patrol, traffic, investigation, administrative services, or support services. Work requires that the employee understand basic principles of law enforcement and supervision and have good knowledge of department rules and regulations. Work is performed under general supervision of a superior, who reviews work for quality and compliance with rules and procedures. Work may require shift work.

Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills,and Abilities

Supervises a squad of police officers engaged in basic patrol and related duties; inspects uniforms and equipment; conducts roll call; assigns work; monitors work of subordinates; provides guidance and assistance as necessary.

Responds to major crimes or incidents; directs, controls, and coordinates activities until relieved by superior or by specialized unit.

Receives and investigates citizen complaints; refers serious allegations to Internal Affairs.

Evaluates employee performance; counsels employees; initiates disciplinary action when required; approves vacation and time off.

Maintains records; investigates and reports on unusual occurrences, as on-the-job injuries or departmental vehicle accidents.

In investigative assignments, monitors investigations by subordinates, assists in and conducts other investigation; interviews suspects and witnesses; obtains and executes search and arrest warrants; locates and arrests suspects.

May be assigned to similar supervisory duties in other functional areas of the Police Department such as tactical operations and court liaison.

Safely operates a motor vehicle during day and night time hours and in all types of weather to observe and supervise subordinates through Police District.

Stands, sits, walks and drives for prolonged periods of time.

Qualifies with a firearm.

Takes emergency law enforcement action to preserve and protect life and property.

Subdues, arrests and detains violators, and, when required, performs any/all tasks of a police officer.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of police line operations (patrol, traffic, investigation) and support services.

Knowledge of Anne Arundel County Police Department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Knowledge of state and local criminal and traffic laws and ordinances.

Knowledge of county geography and demographics.

Knowledge of supervisory theories, principles, and practices.

Knowledge of criminal investigation, evidence collection, interviewing, and interrogation.

Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate work of a small functional work group.

Ability to function effectively under stressful conditions.

Ability to observe and analyze difficult situations and make sound, timely decisions.

Ability to investigate citizen complaints impartially.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to maintain detailed records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school, preferably supplemented by college-level course work; four or more years of experience with the Anne Arundel County Police Department as a police officer; and possession of a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State.
