Job Description
- JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of a Parks Supervisor, provides general labor required for the cleaning of public areas (e.g., litter pick up, trash removal, raking turf, cleaning walks and lots, beach clean up), restrooms, hallways, kitchen areas, grills, and fireplace(s) in assigned facilities. Collects park entrance fees and responds to the specific requests from park patrons. Sets up and tears down rental areas for specific uses and events. Opens the buildings and/or grounds and monitors events for groups. Enforces the established rules of the Ottawa County Parks & Recreation Department based on specific guidelines. This position is seasonal or part-time. Requirements
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides general labor required for the cleaning and maintaining of public areas, restrooms, hallways, kitchen areas, grills, and fireplace(s) in assigned facilities, including but not limited to washing windows, unplugging drains and toilets, changing light bulbs, snow and ice removal, and trash, recyclables, and litter collection.
- Collects park entrance fees, issues permits, and accounts for money collected.
- Sets up and tears down rental areas for specific uses and events and, opens the building and/or grounds and monitors events for groups.
- Maintains the work/park area in a neat, clean and safe condition.
- Performs all work and enforces all park rules in accordance with established safety protocols and procedures.
- Performs general periodic cleaning of park displays, and other nature oriented fixtures and objects.
- Responds to specific requests by park patrons.
- Works on park improvement projects such as painting and making minor repairs.
- May make minor building repairs as needed to restroom fixtures, displays, furniture, shelves, etc.
- Performs other functions as assigned.
- Use of proper chemicals and supplies for ensuring the building maintenance is maintained.
- Reading proficiency in order to read and comprehend written instructions, labels on cleaning compounds, MSDS data sheets and other notices.
- General mathematical skills in order to mix cleaning chemicals in proper proportions and to accurately handle cash and credit card sales.
- Knowledge of safety and bloodborne protocols.
- Commitment to provide quality customer service to the users of County facilities and parks.
- Ability to interact positively and professionally with other Parks and Recreation staff, children, and the general public from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and with widely divergent communication skills.
Required Education, Training and Experience
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be 16 years of age or older, graduation from high school or GED preferred. Applicants under the age of 18 must be able to provide a work permit, which requires permission from a parent or legal guardian.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Driver's License preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to accurately handle cash and identify spills and stains requiring cleaning and/or disinfecting.
- Must possess sufficient mobility with or without assistive devices to access all natural features, structures, and facilities in parks.
- Must be able to descend and ascend from floor and ground level.
- Must be able to work with arms extended above shoulder level to replace light fixtures and other features, fixtures and furnishings.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stepladders in order to access features and fixtures located at heights that cannot be reached while standing on the floor.
- Must have sufficient strength to remove snow from walkways and other areas with manual shovels as well as with snow blowers.
- Must be able to lift and move supplies weighing up to 50 lbs with or without mechanical or other assistance.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, mold, mildew and human wastes, as well as inclement weather.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to custodial cleaning products.
- Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to solvents, detergents, disinfectants; other cleaning compounds; mold, dust, pollen, dirt and human wastes; and inclement weather. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other disease vectors is also possible.
Must be available for day, evening, weekend, and holiday duty.
