Description
Under general supervision, performs water quality control laboratory work, consisting of chemical and bacteriological analysis and testing of potable water; prepares and sterilizes culture media; performs periodic water suitability tests; performs annual tests to maintain certification of the microbiology laboratory by the State of California Health Department; examines a large number of water samples weekly and prepares reports related to total bacteria count and coliform bacteria density; collects water samples from City-wide sources for testing; performs microscopic examination of water samples for identification of algae and protozoa; measures pH conductivity, turbidity and color; measures fluoride, nitrate and ammonia using ion-specific electrodes; analyzes water for minerals and trace metals using flame or furnace absorption spectrometry; analyzes water for organic compounds using gas chromatography, maintains all equipment in clean and operational condition; and performs other related duties as required.
Examples of Duties
Proof of graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or a closely related field. (Copy of diploma or transcripts must be received by the Civil Service Department by close of filing.)
Technical potable water or waste water laboratory experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year for year basis.
The ability to:
input data in to spreadsheets, databases, and laboratory Information Management System
safely operate and maintain fundamental laboratory instruments and equipment, including balances, microscopes and atomic absorption spectrophotometers
perform chemical and bacteriological analysis of water samples
develop scientific conclusionsTypical Qualifications
Screening of candidates will be conducted on the basis of applications and required supplemental applications submitted. Resumes will be accepted, but may not be substituted in lieu of the required application forms. Candidates must clearly describe how they meet the stated requirements. Candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of a comparative analysis will be invited to the oral interview.
