General Summary

The Equipment Operator 2 works at a variety of BREC parks, playgrounds, tennis courts, and other facilities, operating light to heavy equipment and tools, performing and leading maintenance and repair work.

Requirements and Job Specifications

Operates tractors with various implements such as flail mowers; rotary mowers; loaders; box scrapers; aeirfiers, etc. to maintain parks; Cleans and prepares equipment for operations (washes, sweeps, fuels, oils); Operates other motorized equipment such as: bucket trucks; ditchers; pressure washers; sprayers; dozers, backhoes, motorgraders, skid loaders, rollers; etc.; Drives and operates tandem truck as assigned; Operates trash truck and supervises assigned crew (usually 1 or 2 laborers); Performs maintenance of ball fields; Repairs and maintains playground equipment; Loads dirt, sand, gravel, and other materials onto trucks; Digs ditches and fills ditches; Grades and levels park surfaces; Cuts tree limbs; Operates a variety of machinery such as tractors with variety of attachments pick up truck, flail mower, riding mower, loader, backhoe, tandem truck, trash truck, box scrapers, chain saw, tractor and tiller, hoes, shovels, rakes and chainsaws; Repairs and constructs fences; Other duties as assigned.

Functions and Duties

 High School diploma or equivalent; Vo-tech school diploma or associates degree in Horticulture or related preferred; Class 3 Turf and Ornamental Pesticide Applicator's license preferred; Valid LA Class D driver's license; Valid LA Class B CDL w/air brakes preferred; 3 years operator experience.

Supplemental Information

Mechanical aptitude and excellent driving record required; Good interpersonal & organizational skills with ability to prioritize and inspect work; Experience performing repair & maintenance in public outdoor setting; Ability to work independently as well as with others; Experience with backhoes, tractors, loaders, dozers, and other related equipment.

HEALTH INSURANCE 
Comprehensive medical benefits including HMO, PPO and HSA (QHDHP) and options are provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana.  Coverage is effective the first of the month, following three months of employment, a (3 month waiting period). BREC pays 85% for employee and 60% for dependents of the HMO premium.  This amount is applied to the PPO should employees wish to upgrade to this coverage.  Employee cost per month for HMO: $84.13 - employee only; $284.26 - employee & spouse or employee & dependent children; $455.40 - family. Employee cost per month for PPO: $179.95 - employee only; $465.57 - employee & spouse or employee & dependent children; $709.64 - family.  Employee cost per month for HSA: $17.85 – employee only, $73.58 - employee & spouse or employee & dependent children, $121.23 – family.   BREC also offers voluntary insurance plans: DENTAL, VISION, and SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE PLANS (TERM LIFE, CANCER, and SHORT-TERM DISABILITY).

LIFE INSURANCE 
All full-time employees are insured under a Group Term-Life Insurance policy through Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. Coverage is subject to decrease at age 65 and 70. There is no cost to the employee. Coverage is effective immediately.

RETIREMENT SYSTEM 
BREC contributions to the City-Parish Retirement System for each employee amount to 29.44% of salary.  Employees contribute at the rate of 9.5%.  Retirement contributions are tax deferred.  Personal contributions are kept on account and refunded if employees leave BREC before their retirement.  Additional benefit opportunities are available after 25 years through the DROP program.  BREC also offers a Supplemental Retirement DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN through payroll deduction.

HOLIDAYS 
BREC employees receive twelve (12) paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE 
BREC employees accumulate sick leave at the rate of 120 hours per year the first five years they are employed; accrual of hours will increase based on the number of years of service, thereafter, up to 192 hours for 15 or more years.   Employee is eligible to utilize leave after 30 days of continuous employment.

ANNUAL LEAVE 
BREC employees earn annual leave at the rate of 100 hours per year the first five years they are employed; accrual of hours will increase based on  the number of years of service, thereafter, up to 192 hours for 15 or more years.  Employee is eligible to utilize leave after 90 days of continuous employment.

FULL-TIME STATUS 
Upon completion of a six-month probationary period and approval of supervisor, full-time status will be achieved.

EAP
BREC’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is administered by Hidalgo Health Associates. The EAP helps employees and their family members resolve personal or work-related problems.

CREDIT UNION 
BREC employees are eligible to join the City Federal Credit Union and enlist in payroll deduction plan.  Direct Deposit to the Credit Union is also available.
