Job Summary/Scope
Engages in fire suppression and fire prevention activities as a member of a fire company, to protect and safeguard lives and property. Performs rescue and First Responder medical assistance on a regular basis. Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire stations and equipment. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.
 

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1.      PERFORMS first aid, CPR, automatic defibrillation, and medical assistance tasks as required.
2.      PERFORMS all phases of fire suppression duties, including laying hose lines, operating nozzles and master-stream devices, raising and climbing ladders, ventilation work, and salvage and overhaul operations.
3.      PERFORMS extrication and rescue operations to remove trapped victims from hazardous or life threatening situations.
4.      PARTICIPATES in and CONDUCTS numerous types of training activities covering all phases of Department operations, including attendance at state and regional fire schools and seminars.
5.      DRIVES fire apparatus, operates pump and aerial devices under both emergency and non-emergency conditions in the absence of the Driver Engineer.
6.      PARTICIPATES in fire prevention activities by making fire prevention and fire safety inspections of schools, churches, hospitals, and other public and private business, commercial, and industrial facilities for fire hazards and fire code violations.
7.      PERFORMS first responder duties for hazardous material calls.
8.      CLEANS and PERFORMS routine maintenance on fire stations and grounds, apparatus, equipment, and tools.
9.      ASSISTS other City Departments and citizens as necessary.
 
Other Duties and Responsibilities
1.      PARTICIPATES in public fire safety education and public relations programs including tours at school and in fire stations.
2.      PERFORMS duties of a Driver/Engineer or Captain in their absence
3.      PERFORMS all other related duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1.      Must have Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, CPAT and EMT license prior to testing. 
2.      Skills in performing mechanical and physical tasks. 
3.      Ability to assume leadership duties during periods assigned Fire Captain duties and fire apparatus operation during periods assigned Driver Engineer duties. 
4.      Knowledge of fire behavior; hydraulic principles; fire suppression tactics; and department rules, policies and procedures. 
5.      Knowledge of City geography, principles of building construction, and basic first aid and life support. 
6.      Knowledge of reporting and record keeping systems. 
7.      Knowledge of hazardous materials. 
8.      Ability to operate heavy duty fire apparatus under emergency conditions. 
9.      Ability to react quickly and effectively, and to cope with stressful situations and function effectively in fire ground activities.
10. Skills in interpersonal communications. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
11. Valid Driver's License required.
12. Must meet “Qualifying Standards” as specified in Article 22 of Working Agreement with Local 77.

Material and Equipment Directly Used
Uses a variety of equipment including fire suppression equipment, emergency medical equipment, fire protection equipment, hand and power tools and communication equipment and other related equipment. Operation of various fire trucks and other motor vehicles. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree in Fire Science preferred.
 

The following benefits are provided for all regular full-time and regular part-time employees who regularly work at least 30 hours per week. This is a brief summary only. Compensation (Pay)
Payday occurs every other Thursday, for the pay period ending the preceding Sunday at midnight.

Vacation
You begin earning vacation from the first day on the job. Vacation is earned at the following rates per pay period:

There is no “waiting period” to utilize your vacation accruals. However, use of vacation time is subject to supervisor approval. You may carry over four weeks or 160 hours, (240 hours for 24-hour Fire Personnel) of vacation leave from one year to the next.

Sick Leave
Should you have any personal illness, injury, doctor or dentist appointments, you may use your accumulated sick leave. There is no “waiting period” to utilize your accruals, however sick leave must be approved by your supervisor. Sick leave is earned at the following rates per pay period:

Holidays: Holidays falling on Saturday are recognized on Friday; Sunday holidays are recognized on the following Monday.

Retirement
The City participates in L.A.G.E.R.S. (Local Government Employees Retirement System) retirement program. (Does not apply to Police). The City pays the full contribution cost of membership. Early retirement is available at age 55 after five years of service. Full retirement; age 60. Firefighters may retire with reduced benefits at age 50; full retirement at age 55. Police Officers have a separate plan and contribute at the rate of 4.0% of their salary with retirement after 20 years of service. Firefighters and Police Officers are not subject to Social Security withholding (FICA), except for the Medicare portion currently at 1.45%.
 
Health Insurance
The City currently has two plan options including a PPO plan and an HMO plan. The employee’s coverage is paid in full by the City for the base plan (PCA PPO plan). If an employee chooses to buy up or add dependent/family coverage, there is an additional cost to the employee.

The City is currently enrolled in Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City for health insurance. Co-payments and maximum out-of-pocket expenses, as well as details related to managed care, are covered during employee in-processing soon after you start employment.

Dental Insurance
Paid in full by the City for the employee’s premium. Coverage is available for dependent/family with the premium paid 100% by the employee. The City’s dental is through Ameritas. There is a $50 annual deductible ($100 per family), except no deductible for preventative services. Enrollment for dependents must either be at the time of employment or during a once-a-year “open enrollment” held each May.

Life Insurance
Group Term Insurance of two times annual salary is provided. In addition an equal amount of accidental death and dismemberment coverage (AD&D) is provided. Two plans are offered for dependent coverage with the premium paid 100% by the employee. Supplemental Life is also available to EMPLOYEES ONLY in increments from $10,000 up to two times your annual salary. Cost is based on your age and amount of insurance elected. The City is covered through EMC National Life.

LTD
Long Term Disability is available to employees who are unable to perform their job. There is a 120-day waiting period, with payment of 60% of your wage after that time for up to two years. Benefits could potentially be continued up to age 65. Our carrier, CIGNA, determines eligibility and conditions.

EAP
An Employee Assistance Plan is available to employees and their dependents for up to 3 sessions for assistance in dealing with personal issues. 

The following are optional benefits available to employees paid entirely by the employee:

Supplemental Cancer & Universal Life
Available to employees and their family members.

Cancer:
available at two levels of coverage with rates dependent upon which level is elected and who will be covered under the plan.

Universal Life:
life insurance that builds cash value with rates dependent upon amount of coverage desired Smoker/non-smoker rates available.

Both the Cancer and Universal Life are portable policies (can be continued at the same rates after leaving employment with the City.) These policies are through Colonial Insurance.

Deferred Compensation
The City has two 457 deferred compensation plans for employees to choose from. 

ROTH IRA
The City offers a ROTH IRA plan for employees who want other investment opportunities.

Credit Union
You may participate in the United Consumers' Credit Union by applying at their office located at 724 N. Belt Highway.  Checking, savings, Christmas Club, loans and other services are available.
