General Information

KIND OF WORK: This is routine clerical work involving typing, data entry, file maintenance, records processing, customer service, and simple bookkeeping operations.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for performing either specialized clerical duties or a wide variety of routine clerical tasks. Assignments may range from elementary bookkeeping, entering data into a computer, typing and processing court or medical records. Work is performed under the general supervision of a designated superior. No supervision is exercised over others, although the employee may serve as a lead worker or train new workers.

Requirements

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Types correspondence, financial and budget reports, medical forms, memoranda, warrants, contracts, requisitions, deeds and other documents; files invoices, vouchers, patient or tenant records, correspondence, court records and other materials; maintains a variety of bookkeeping, licensing, clinical, legal and clerical records and files; compiles statistical data for reports; issues licenses and permits; performs cashiering duties for receiving, receipting and recording fees, rents, taxes, permits, bills, fines or tickets; posts to ledgers or journals, manually or by computer; computes bills, charges and rents for billing or recording; enters and verifies information in the computer; assists the general public, patients, clients, tenants or other employees by telephone or in person by furnishing requested information or service; performs related work as required.

Description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test and preferably some clerical and public contact experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess a current Certification of Proficiency from the Mobile County Personnel Board certifying the ability to type a minimum of 35 words per minute.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Good knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; some knowledge of office procedures and equipment; some knowledge of clerical bookkeeping practices; some knowledge of court procedures and forms or the ability to readily acquire such knowledge; some knowledge of computers and job related software programs; ability to accurately type at a rate of 35 WPM from copy or rough draft; ability to maintain financial records and prepare routine reports; ability to maintain specialized files and records; ability to acquire skill in the operation of data entry equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
