Description

Performs a variety of professional veterinary duties in the operation of the spay/neuter clinic.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general direction from the Purchasing Manager.

Exercises direct supervision over technical and clerical staff.

Examples of Duties

Provides limited veterinary care for dogs and cats; performs pre- and post-operative examinations on dogs and cats; tranquilizes and administers anesthetics to dogs and cats; spays or neuters dogs and cats; provides vaccination programs for dogs and cats.

Answers questions and provides information to the public regarding animal vaccinations, health care and post-operative care.

Acts as veterinary consultant to Lane County Animal Regulation Authority on animal health issues.

Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises and reviews the work of staff involved in the daily activities of the spay/neuter clinic.

Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; establishes schedules and methods for veterinary care; implements policies and procedures for clinic including safety procedures.

Evaluates operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; recommends improvements and modifications; prepares various reports on activities including operational and fiscal status reports.

Responsible for the selection, supervision and evaluation of assigned staff; assigns work and ensures appropriate training is provided; investigates complaints; recommends and administers disciplinary actions; handles sensitive personnel matters and recommends grievance responses; exercises full supervision over employees.

Ensures implementation of and adherence to the City’s Affirmative Action and Diversity Work Plans. Facilitates staff development on such issues as diversity and creating a respectful working environment.

Performs complete physical exams for animals traveling out of the state in order to provide official certificates of veterinary inspections.

Coordinates Clinic activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Animal anatomy and physiology.

Principles and techniques of small animal surgery.

Behavioral characteristics of animals.

Proper animal restraint techniques.

Principles and practices of veterinary immunology, epidemiology, diagnostics and therapeutics.

Principles and practices of veterinary pharmacology and anesthesiology, including the interaction and effect of various medications.

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations regarding veterinary and public health practices.

Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.

Principles and procedures of financial record keeping and reporting.

Safe work practices.


Ability to:

Perform surgical procedures including spaying and neutering dogs and cats.

Administer vaccinations to dogs and cats.

Properly detect and diagnose illnesses of dogs and cats.

Supervise, train and evaluate assigned staff.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

One year of increasingly responsible experience in veterinary medicine.

Training:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university.


License or Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain a permanent, valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Oregon.

Must be eligible to obtain a Drug Enforcement Administration Registration Number from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Must have, or be able to obtain, accreditation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
