General Information

KIND OF WORK: This is professional work in observing all greyhounds, reporting indications of unsoundness or instability and the collection of samples for laboratory examination.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for inspecting and observing all greyhounds and enforcing health laws and regulations pertaining to the greyhounds at the Mobile Greyhound Park. Work is performed under the general direction of the Racing Commission. Supervision is exercised over Veterinarian Assistants and part-time Veterinarians. The incumbent is expected to work on weekends and holidays.

Requirements

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Observes greyhounds prior to and after each race; conducts research; evaluates dog handling procedures; consults with Commissioners on policies and informs Commissioners of new procedures; inspects kennels for sanitation conditions and conformance to Commission rules; documents findings on any unacceptable or problem situation and reports situations to Commissioners; submits written reports on positive test results; instructs and supervises Veterinarian Assistants in collecting samples; insures that all samples are properly identified with type of examination noted; confers and consults with laboratory officials concerning testing problems and procedures; analyzes positive results; verifies laboratory charges; approves bills for equipment and laboratory charges prior to presentation to Commission for payments; consults and confers with greyhound owners and trainers; notifies proper person of any sick dog; examines dogs and diagnoses illnesses and conditions; recommends treatment and prevention measures; explains Commission policies, procedures and acceptable practices to owners and trainers; examines dogs for ear-tattoo positive identification; records and evaluates dogs' performance, race record, order of finish and betting statistics; records data for computer compilation; files official recordings and documentation daily; verifies and files daily specimen reports monthly; files positive sample reports; verifies correctness of the daily record sheets by checking the laboratory reports; verifies that the daily report matches the official ledger and the computer sheet; answers questions from Commissioners, owners, trainers, laboratory officials and other parties; signs purchase orders and invoices; performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Thorough knowledge of veterinary medicine; thorough knowledge of the diseases and ills of canine animals; thorough knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations and policies pertaining to the racing of greyhounds at the Mobile Greyhound Park; good knowledge of the principles of record keeping and supervision; ability to prepare clear, concise oral and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other veterinarians, owners, lessors, trainers, laboratory officials and other track employees. 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Attainment of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from a recognized college or university and a minimum of one year's experience in diagnosing and treating canine animals; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a license to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of Alabama.
