Essential Job Duties

  1. Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of his or her own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
  2. Response to emergency and non emergency calls for service including but not limited to  rescue, fire suppression, back up, ventilation, salvage and overhaul, hazardous material tactics, emergency medical assistance, utilities, air supply, rehabilitation, exposure, water supply, and specialized rescue tactics– daily.
  3. Assist with safety education for the community – daily.
  4. Clean and maintain station and equipment – daily.
  5. Participate in personal, company and department training – daily.
  6. Regularly participate in either group or self-directed physical fitness activities -daily.
  7. Assist with all inspections and testing that include but are not limited to pre-incident planning,
  8. building inspections, hydrant inspections, and hose and pump tests – daily, weekly, and annually.
  9. Assist Driver/Operator with truck and equipment checks – daily.
  10. Perform recordkeeping – daily.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Secondary Job Duties

  1. Back-up driver (once certified) – daily.
  2. Secondary duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Be a citizen of the United States, not less than 21 years of age.
  2. Ark. State Code provides that no person who has arrived at the age of thirty-five (35) shall be eligible for appointment to the Fire Department except where the applicant is already a paid firefighter. The maximum age of thirty-five (35) shall not apply to:
  3. Any person who has at least two (2) years of previous experience as a paid firefighter with another department and whose years of experience as a paid firefighter, when subtracted from the person’s age leaves a remainder of not more than thirty- two (32) years.
  4. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a valid driver’s license.
  5. Must possess one of the following qualifications prior to application:

    a.         Arkansas certification or National Registry certification

    b.         Medical certification or license at a higher level (paramedic,   
                nurse,  etc.)
    c.         12 college credit hours in core curriculum courses (English, Math,             Science, Communications, Speech, Journalism or Foreign 
                Language)
    d.         Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification through IFSAC

    e.         certification (NFPA, Pro-Board, etc.)

    f.          A minimum of two years honorable service in the US Armed 
     
               Forces including National Guard.

  6. Must successfully pass a criminal background check and drug test.
  7. Must successfully pass a comprehensive physical examination.
  8. If not already certified, ability to obtain EMT-B, Firefighter I and Firefighter II (within 12 months of hire).
  9. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and written often under adverse conditions; possess good judgment; good powers of observation and memory.
  10. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the general public.
  11. Must be proficient in the operation and use of all vehicles and equipment.
  12. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff.
  13. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  14. Exposure to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire, hazardous materials, special rescue scene situations and emergency medical incidents. Mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to highly active states.

CITY OF FAYETTEVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT HIRING PROCEDURE INFORMATION: You are applying for a much sought after public safety job in a challenging work environment. Though characterized by long hours and strenuous physical demands, the fire service offers the opportunity of an exciting career coupled with many built-in rewards. Fire Department positions with the Fayetteville Fire Department are under a civil service system and are filled by competitive examination. All applicants must meet the following requirements established by the rules and regulations of the Civil Service Comission of the City of Fayetteville: A. Be a citizen of the United States; B. Provide documentary proof that the applicant will be not less than 21 years of age or older than 35 years of age at the test date (the next test date is displayed on the Job Opportunities web page); C. Have graduated from an accredited High School or passed the General Education Development (GED) Test indicating high school graduation level; D. Have never been convicted of a felony; E. Have attained ONE of the following: a. Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician through the National EMT Registry or the State of Arkansas Department of Health; b. Medical Certification or license at a higher level (paramedic, nurse, etc.); c. 12 college credit hours in core curriculum courses (English, Math, Science, Communications, Speech, Journalism, or Foreign Language); d. FIRE DEPARTMENT HIRING PROCEDURE INFORMATION, CONTINUED: Per Arkansas law, there are age requirements as well. An applicant must be at least 21 years of age as of the test date. The test date (if the next test is already scheduled) will be posted on the City's "Job Opportunities" page. In addition, an applicant must not be 35 years or older as of the test date except when the statutory exceptions apply. The State law on this is: Arkansas Code Annotated § 14-51-301. Board's rules and regulations * * * * (C) Provided, however, the maximum age limit for appointment to any position with a fire department in sub-division (b)(1)(B)(i) of this section shall not apply to: (i) Any person who has at least two (2) years of previous experience as a paid firefighter with another fire department and whose years of experience as a paid firefighter when subtracted from the person's age leaves a remainder of not more than thirty-two (32) years; or (ii) Any person who is applying for a position with a fire department in which the primary functions of the job involve duties that are administrative, managerial, or supervisory in nature;

FIRE DEPARTMENT HIRING PROCEDURE INFORMATION, CONTINUED: If you believe your interests and abilities are compatible with these job requirements, we invite you to carefully read the procedures and complete the Supplemental Questions. Your application will be held until the closing date for the next test. All qualified applicants will be notified by mail approximately two to three weeks prior to the test date. You are responsible for notifying Human Resources if your e-mail address changes after you have submitted your application. The City normally conducts entrance exams one to two times per year. These examinations consist of several phases. The first part of the testing process consists of a written test administered by the Fayetteville Civil Service Commission and Human Resources. This is a general knowledge test and does not require technical knowledge of firefighting operations to successfully pass the test. The second part of the testing process consists of five (5) exercises designed to test the applicant's physical agility and ability to withstand strenuous activities. Applicants must pass the above listed tests in order to qualify for the next part of the examination which consists of an oral interview by the Civil Service Commission and an oral interview by a board of Fayetteville Fire Officers. Normally the written and physicial tests will occur on a Saturday, followed by interviews on a Monday. Applicants who pass the complete examination procedure will be certified and will be added to the list of certified applicants (in order of highest to lowest evaluation scores). When a job opening occurs the Chief may hire from the top three on the list of certified applicants. A certified applicant remains on the list for twelve months. If an applicant is not hired during the twelve months, he or she must go through the application procedure again in order to be certified.
