Principal Paralegals assign, train, supervise and review the work of subordinate Senior Paralegals within the division; monitor and evaluate the work of subordinates; establish work standards and procedures for the paralegal staff; develop, coordinate and conduct on-going training programs related to paralegal development and continuing education; counsel legal teams on effective utilization of paralegal staff; perform paralegal duties involving the most difficult, sensitive, and/or high profile matters; act as liaison to City Departments to provide answers to routine legal questions and to research the more complex questions and provide research information to attorneys; and related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

 

EDUCATION: (You must submit a copy of your degree with the application.) -OR-

2. College graduation with a Jurisprudence Doctorate Degree in Law from an academic institution accredited by the American Association of Law Schools (AALS), American Bar Association (ABA), California State Supreme Court, or California State Bar Examining Committee.

3. Completion of a formalized Paralegal Training Program accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).

(You must submit a copy of your certificate of completion with the application.) -OR-

4. Completion of a formalized Paralegal Training Program that includes a minimum of 24 semester units in law related courses.

EXPERIENCE:

(You must submit a copy of your certificate of completion with the application.)

Three years of full-time Paralegal work experience, including one year of experience as a Senior Paralegal with the City of San Diego.

Screening Process

*THE SCREENING PROCESS

will consist of a comprehensive evaluation of the Standard Employment Application for applicable education, experience, and/or training. Only those applicants that clearly demonstrate meeting the requirements specified above will be placed on the eligible list. Approved applications will be made available to the hiring department(s) for review.

ELIGIBLE LIST:

Candidates who are successful in the screening process described above will be placed on a one category eligible list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next six months. For each vacancy, candidates certified to the hiring department will be contacted for an interview.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

: Any employment offer is conditional pending the results of all pre-employment screening processes required for the job, which may include, but are not limited to the following: confirmation of citizenship/legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review/exam (which may include drug/alcohol testing); reference checks; background investigation; polygraph examination; and a fingerprint check. The fingerprints will be submitted to the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
