The following benefits apply to Permanent full-time Commonwealth employees only.  Permanent part-time employees may receive certain pro-rated benefits based on hours worked.

Exceptional Medical Benefits
Employees have medical coverage from their first day on the job, and can pay for dependent coverage.  After six months, family coverage is paid for as well.  Employees can choose between three types of plan regardless of their location.  Costs and benefits differ, allowing employees to make selections based on their own personal needs.  After six months, the employee and family are also covered for prescription drug coverage, dental, vision and hearing aid.  Commonwealth retirees also enjoy exceptional medical benefits.

Generous Paid Time Off
Based on years of service, employees may earn from one week in the first year up to 26 vacation days per year.  They also receive personal leave, more than two weeks of leave per year, and 11 paid holidays.  There are other types of paid time off, including civil and administrative leave.  Extended unpaid absences are available for sick, parental, family care and military reasons, and health benefits are included for many such absences.

Outstanding Retirement Options
The commonwealth's defined benefit pension plan provides retirees with a guaranteed level of income.  The full retirement benefit (normally at age 60, or 35 years of service regardless of age) is based on their years of state services times their final average salary times 2.5%.  Employees who retire before full retirement receive a reduced benefit.  An employee who works for 35 years can expect to receive a pension equal to 87.5% of their final average salary, guaranteed for life!  Employees can supplement their retirement savings by participating in a deferred compensation program, and invest pre-tax dollars in any of 11 different options of their choice.

Workplace Support Services
The commonwealth provides a full suite of workplace support services to address employees' needs.  These include mental health/substance abuse benefits; a free, confidential employee assistance program; child care centers at select locations; a family care account program; and much, much more.
