The single-function paramedic position is a part-time non-benefited position.  Part-time positions are limited to 960 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30).

Due to budgetary constraints operational budgets do not include funding of CalPERS employer contributions for part-time positions. Therefore a qualified candidate who is a member of CalPERS from current or past employment will be restricted from part-time employment.

OVERVIEW This is a non-firefighter position. The single-function paramedic responds to calls for basic and advanced life support emergency medical services mass casualty and man-made/natural disasters rescues and other incidents. The single-function paramedic will assist in emergency medical services training and education; and will operate EMS specialized equipment and tools. This position will assist in the routine maintenance and inspection of tools and equipment; and participates in the cleaning and maintenance of the Fire Station and apparatus. The single-function paramedic must have the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; understand and follow oral and written instructions; make good judgements issue appropriate orders and act appropriately and calmly in emergency situations; perform strenuous activity under hazardous and dangerous circumstances; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and general public. Los Angeles County Accreditation is highly desirable but not required at the time of job offer. Los Angeles County accreditation must be obtained within two months of employment. Individuals in the single-function paramedic position are eligible to transition to the Firefighter/Paramedic position at the Department’s discretion after meeting the requirements of the position. Requirements include developing a skill competency equivalent to the California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification or completion of an accredited fire academy. Physical Demands and Working Environment

Environment:
Work is performed primarily in the field; and occasionally in a standard office setting. Work in the field may bring exposure to high or precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; explosives; vibrations; varying weather; and rugged landscapes. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk; run; stand; climb; balance; stoop; kneel; crouch; crawl; taste; smell; verbally communicate; and lift weight in excess of 150 pounds on an occasional to frequent basis. Required to wear appropriate firefighting and chemical safety apparel and equipment; including turnout gear; helmet; hood; and self-contained breathing apparatus. Must be able to withstand environmental exposures.

Vision:
See in the normal visual range with or without correction. Specific vision abilities also require close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to focus.

Hearing:
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Examples of Duties

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Respond to emergency situations; performs patient assessment; and administers basic and advanced life support medical treatment
  • Documents and completes all reports such as: pre-hospital care reports; incident reports; and continuing education records.
  • Become familiar with and maintains medical information in a confidential manner subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) per operating procedures and policies.
  • Performs decontamination procedures in compliance with Cal-OSHA regulations.
  • Performs lifting and moving of patients; and vehicle extraction activities.
  • Participates in drills and training and keeps up-to-date on methods; policies; and procedures.
  • Participates in training and education for emergency medical services.
  • Cleans and maintains fire apparatus; emergency medical equipment; and fire station facility.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of facilities and equipment; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs washes; cleans; polishes; maintains and test apparatus and equipment.
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.
  • Provides instruction to other personnel and public on subjects relating to emergency management services.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Single-Function Paramedic
Knowledge Of

  • Applicable federal; state; county and La Habra Heights Fire Department regulations; practices; and procedures.
  • Infectious control procedures per State of California and Los Angeles County EMS guidelines.
  • Emergency radio communication procedures.
  • Geography and street layout of the District and surrounding area.
  • English usage; spelling; grammar; and punctuation.
  • Principles and practices of customer services.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare clear and concise reports and other written materials using a computer.
  • Remain calm; make sound decisions; and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency at using fire service tools; equipment and small engines.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively; both orally and in writing; in the English language.
