Job Description

Under general supervision, to plan, develop, and provide progressive therapeutic ecreation for mental health patients; and to do other work as required.

This class reports to a Supervising Occupational Therapist and is distinguished by the responsibility to participate as a member of therapeutic treatment teams that design and provide rehabilitative therapy programs for mental health patients. The Recreation Therapist attempts to improve the quality of life of patients by using a variety of recreational activities.

Examples of Essential Duties

* Plans, develops, and provides recreational activities for mental health patients; applies recreation therapy knowledge and techniques to the problems of mental disorder and retardation, drug abuse, and alcoholism.

* Assesses patient needs and determines appropriate recreational activities; evaluates the interests of the individual patients and assists and encourages them in selecting and participating in leisure-time activities.

* Arranges for patients to participate in community diversional and social activities; participates in planning treatment goals for specific patients.

* Observes and records patients' reactions; evaluates patient programs; participates in clinical conferences on patient evaluations.

* Develops and evaluates community-based recreational activities; prepares records and reports as needed.

Qualifications

OPTION I

License/Certificate: Possession of a Recreation Therapist Certificate issued by the California Board of Recreation and Park or Certification by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society or eligible for certificate with completed course work and internship awaiting board exam.

OPTION II

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy;

OR

Possession of A Bachelor's degree in Recreation which includes 14 semester or 20 quarter units of courses from at least three of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Biological Sciences, Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation, Adaptive Physical Education and Creative Arts, Human Services.

Experience: Two years of experience planning, developing, and providing therapeutic recreational activities for individuals in a clinical, residential, or community-based setting.

INSURANCE PLANS: Choice of several medical and dental plans within flexible benefits program. County contributes $395.40 towards flexible benefits. Vision coverage is also available.

PEMHCA Amount: County contribution to Public Employees Medical and Hospital Care program (PEHMCA) in the amount of $25/month is available for retirees health insurance through the County.

RETIREMENT: Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS) equal to 8% of salary. Retirement formula is 3% @ 60. Retirement amount: The highest 12 month period earning level is used to determine the retirement benefit amount. All new employee's pay retirement contributions for the first five years of continuous service.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Two voluntary deferred compensation 457 plans available.

VACATION ACCRUAL: 0-3 years, 80 hours; 4-9 years, 120 hours; 10 or more years, 160 hours.

Accrual limited to 3 times current rate.

HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year. Any employee regularly scheduled to work on a paid holiday will be paid his regular rate for time worked and is entitled to 8 hours (selected classes 1 1/2 time) of holiday pay or compensatory time off.

SICK LEAVE: 4 hours accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual. Upon retirement or death, unused sick leave is paid at a rate of 50% the current salary value after 5 years (not to exceed 960 hours).

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: 5 days (3 paid, 2 from leave balances).

DISABILITY: County paid short-term disability (STD) of .9% of employee salary up to a maximum of $285.90 per year. Maximum amount received by employee on STD is 55% of hourly wage with a maximum of $249.70 per week. 7 day waiting period.

UNEMPLOYMENT: County pays .3% of base salary.

MILEAGE: Mileage reimbursement of $0.36 per mile.

CALLBACK: Minimum 1-hour callback, some classification 3-hour minimum (Does not apply to all classifications.)

SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL: 3:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. @ $.60/hour, 11:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m. @ $1.20/hour. Selected classifications are 3:00 p.m.-11:00/11:30 p.m. @ $1.00/hour or $1.50/hour; 11:00 p.m.-7:00/7:30 a.m. @$1.55 or $2.25/hour. Selected classifications not eligible for night differential.

STANDBY PAY: 1 hour for every 8 hours on standby; selected classifications: $2.75, $3.00 or $3.75/hour. (Does not apply to all classifications.)

EDUCATION REIMBURSEMENT: May be reimbursed for actual costs, subject to availability of funds.

BILINGUAL PAY: Available @ $.25/hour (at least 10% of time) or $.50/hour (50% of time or must translate before an officially convened court, appeals board, commission or hearing body).

Other: Double time: selected classes for work after 12 hours of continuous duty; selected classes for non-scheduled weekends. Incumbents of professional engineering or facilities project manager position not required to be registered, but who is registered as a Professional Engineer - 10 range differential; licensed land surveyor - 10 range differential; architecture license - 10 range differential. Critical care differential for LVN's in selected areas - $.80/hr. In-charge differential for LVN's - $.42/hr.; for LPT's - $.43/hr. Temporarily assigned overall RCRMC respiratory therapist responsibilities for Respiratory Therapist. Registered - $.43/hr. LVN Preceptor - $.50/hr.; Radiology Preceptor - $1.00/hr. Rehabilitative Services - $2.25 or $4.25/hr. Haz Mat Mgmt Specialist - $150/mo. Forensic Mental Health Differential 17 ranges. Uniforms provided for selected classes. Education for Continued Licensing - see MOU for details.
