$21.59 an hour - Full-time 
San Diego Zoo Safari Park - Escondido, CA 92027
Position Type: Hourly Full-Time Non-Exempt Union Position - if selected there will be union fees and dues to be paid to the Union 


Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION 
The Horticulturist under direction, performs routine horticulture tasks, grounds maintenance, and tree related work of assigned area; develops new area when necessary. This position reports to a Lead/Supervisor.
 
WHAT YOU WILL DO 
Mows, edges, irrigates and fertilizes lawns 
Fertilizes and cultivates plantings and shrubs 
Prepares new areas for planting 
Plants transplants and nurtures seedlings and other new plantings
Collects seeds 
Prunes shrubbery and trees 
Rakes, sweeps and generally maintains an appealing appearance to grounds 
Controls pests 
Answers questions from the public 
May drive motorize vehicles on and off grounds

Prior commercial gardening and tree work desired

Education and Experience

Six (6) months of experience performing grounds-keeping or facilities maintenance and repair work in open spaces or facilities.

License and Certification

Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C, before date of appointment is required for most assignments.

Physical and Mental Requirements
 
Positions in this class typically require body mobility to stand, sit, walk, stoop, twist, bend, climb ladders, crawl, balance, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds, and perform other strenuous work. Incumbents must possess vision sufficient to read standard size text, distinguish colors, and at distances over 20 feet. Requires the ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably in person to individuals and groups; possess manual dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively and without limitation to range and motion to operate a keyboard, tools, and specialized equipment. Incumbents may be required to drive work vehicles. Required to have stamina to walk, stand, or drive a vehicle on a daily basis for extended periods.
 
Environmental and Working Conditions
 
Positions are assigned to both office environment and outdoor settings. Work involves exposure to dust, fumes, and other allergens. May come in contact with contagious environments, animals and wildlife that may bring potential physical harm. Incumbents may be subject to moving objects, machinery, or vehicles, and intense noise levels. May be required to work under various weather conditions, including rainstorms, and walk in uneven, slippery, and sometimes dangerous terrain. Requires the use and wear of safety equipment, including safety glasses and footwear, protective clothing and gloves, sun and hearing protection, and hard hats.
 
May be required to work day, nights/evenings, weekends, and holidays. May be required to work overtime.



RECRUITMENT PROCESS
