Position Announcement

This is a job announcement for specific part-time instructor needs in the Dixie State University (DSU) Biological Sciences Department for Fall Semester 2021. The department specifically needs instructors in the following areas: 

  • Teach lower-division courses in General Biology (BIOL 1010) and Human Biology (BIOL 1200), both online as well as face-to-face. 
  • Lab instructors for teaching face-to-face General Biology Lab (BIOL 1015) and Principles of Biology Lab (BIOL 1615).
The above classes are lower division and part of the General Education curriculum, with several sections possible each semester.
 
The department is also seeking qualified individuals that can teach online upper-division courses in Evolution (BIOL 3010) and Ecology (BIOL 3040), as well as other courses that may complement the department curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in General Biology, Human Biology, Labs, Evolution, and/or Ecology as assigned, under the direction of the Dean/Department Chair. A course catalog by major, division, and discipline is found online at https://catalog.dixie.edu/courses/biol/. Preference will be given to those who have experience with and can teach face-to-face, online, virtual, or blended courses.
  • Hold office hour and meet with students enrolled in assigned courses.
  • Attend and/or complete required trainings by the University (usually assigned in your first semester teaching, then annually thereafter), as well as completing any additional trainings, as needed and determined by the department.
  • Abide by all applicable executive orders, federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations, as well as University policies and procedures relating to part-time instructors and general campus employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Well-qualified applicants with a bachelor’s degree will be considered for lab courses (BIOL 1015 and 1615). Master's Degree in related field required for teaching all other lower division courses (BIOL 1010 and 1200). Doctorate degree required for upper division courses (3000 level or above).
  • Must be able to teach in Washington County, Utah in order to teach face-to-face or blended courses. Must be a resident of Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Texas, or Nebraska to teach online or virtual courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of course content required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively teach students with varied academic and cultural backgrounds, using a variety of instructional methods and apply best practices in the discipline.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse groups.
  • Ability to use student-centered instructional strategies and techniques.
  • Ability to motivate students and competently evaluate student progress and achievement.
  • Teaching experience in higher education preferred.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Part-time instructor position, paid at $800 per credit hour and governed by University Policies 631 and 638 (lab courses count as 3 workload credits for compensation). Free access to Employee Assistance Program thru Blomquist-Hale and HPC Fitness Center/Recreation facilities on-campus; no other benefits. Fall Semester 2021 starts on Monday, August 23.
