SUMMARY

Operates light or heavy equipment and performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance and construction of streets; wastewater collection and water distribution systems; and/or collection and disposal of refuse, solid waste and/or recycling operations.
 
Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from level I or, when filled from the outside, require directly related experience.  Level and starting salary will depend upon the successful candidate’s education, knowledge, training, experience, and certifications.

Equipment Operator I:
Under immediate supervision, this is the entry-level class in the Equipment Operator series and is expected to learn to operate the full range of heavy motor equipment and skilled work in the construction and maintenance of streets and wastewater and water distribution systems. Incumbents perform work under close supervision while learning job tasks. Incumbents entering the class are required to have little directly related experience. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during performance and upon completion, and changes in procedures or exceptions to rules are explained as they arise.

Equipment Operator II:
This is the journey-level class in the Equipment Operator series responsible for the operation of all heavy motor equipment and skilled work in the construction and maintenance of streets and wastewater and water distribution systems. The classification is distinguished from the Equipment Operator I classification by the possession of two years’ increasingly responsible work in the operation of a variety of heavy motor equipment. Incumbents assigned to this class are expected to perform the full range of work assigned to this class, be fully proficient in the operation of all heavy equipment within the assigned division, and work with considerable independence and initiative.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Operates several different kinds of heavy and light equipment including backhoes, motor graders, front-end loaders, excavators, pavers, sweepers, flush trucks, sewer televising truck, rollers, snow plows, distributor trucks, automated trash collection trucks, special collection truck, valve exercising equipment, and other related equipment. Performs equipment operations in the construction and maintenance of streets; water and wastewater distribution systems; and in the daily collection and delivery of refuse to landfills. Responds appropriately to inquiries from the public. Services and inspects assigned equipment; maintains service and operator use records. Advises supervisor on operating conditions of equipment and progress of projects. Reports needed mechanical adjustment and repair. May perform traffic control according to ASTA guidelines. May assist with City special events, summer and fall bulk item cleanup, chemical and leaf collection, and related refuse. May assist with repair of water line breaks, water and sewer connection taps, servicing fire hydrants and monitoring pressure records, or operating a sewer jet/vac unit in video inspections of sewer mains. May be on call 24 hours a day, year-round, including participating in snow and ice control as assigned. May be required to work overtime. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:

Equipment Operator I:
High school diploma or GED; one year experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment in construction and maintenance. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Equipment Operator II:
High school diploma or GED; two years’ experience operating heavy motorized equipment in construction and maintenance. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Equipment Operator I:
Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a safe driving record.

Equipment Operator II:
Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License for the Environmental Services Division with a safe driving record; Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a safe driving record for all other divisions in the Infrastructure Department.
TESTING PROCEDURES
