The Deputy Sheriff Trainee class is an entry and Academy training level classification. Under close supervision, incumbents typically report to a Sheriff's Sergeant and attend Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (POST) academy to learn the principles, methods, and techniques employed by the journey level Deputy Sheriff class.

Deputy Sheriff Trainees are eligible for promotion to Deputy Sheriff upon successful completion of a Basic Peace Officer Standard Training academy. 

Examples of Essential Duties

  • Prevents crime, apprehend suspects, control traffic, and enforce criminal and civil laws and regulations.
  • Conducts preliminary criminal and civil investigations.
  • Serves and administers various civil and criminal documents.
  • Effects custody and insures safe storage of held property/evidence. * Prepares incident, traffic and daily activity reports.

Qualifications

Knowledge of: The English language; Basic arithmetic concepts typical of that derived from basic coursework in these subjects at the high school level.

Ability to: Comprehend and retain factual information pertaining to policies, rules, regulations, and laws and accurately apply what is learned; Analyze situations and/or data and draw meaningful conclusions leading to a reasonable course of action; Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Meet the physical requirements of a Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (P.O.S.T.) academy.

Education: Graduation from high school, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test, or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education.

Essential Special Requirements: Applicants must meet the following State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) requirements:

Age: Applicants must be 20 years 9 months of age at the start of the academy.

Vision: Applicants who wear glasses or contact lenses must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 correctable to 20/20. Applicant must have normal peripheral fields and normal color vision.

Hearing:Applicants must not have hearing loss greater than 30dB at any of the first three frequencies and an average loss no greater than 30dB for all four frequencies. Hearing aids are not permitted to meet these requirements.

Supplemental Information

Written exam and physical agility tests are required.

Medical/Dental Insurance: A flex benefit amount of $330.44 monthly may be used for medical and/or dental. Voluntary vision plan available.

PEHMCA Amount: County contribution to Public Employees Medical and Hospital Care program (PEHMCA) in the amount of $25/month is available for retirees health insurance through the County.

Retirement: County paid retirement to the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) equal to 9% of salary (new employee pay for the first 3 yrs). Retirement formula is 3% @ 50.

Deferred Compensation: Two voluntary deferred compensation plans available.

Vacation Accrual: 0-3 years, 80 hours; 4-9 years, 120 hours; 10 or more years, 160 hours. Accrual limited to 3 times current rate.

Holidays: Normally 12 paid holidays per year. An employee who is regularly scheduled to work on a paid holiday is paid at his/her regular rate for the time actually worked and is entitled to not more than 8 hours of pay at time and 1/2. For Correctional Deputies, this includes MLK Jr. holiday. All regular employees, except Correctional Deputies, receive 8 hrs CTO at time and 1/2 when MLK Jr. holiday falls on their normal day off.

Sick Leave: 4 hours sick leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual. Upon retirement or death, unused sick leave is paid for at a rate of 10% the current salary value after 5 years plus 2% for each additional year to a maximum of 50% (not to exceed 120 days).

Bereavement Leave: 5 days from sick leave

Disability: Long Term Disability (LTD)-County pays $10.50/mo. to RSA, who applies premiums to a LTD plan(s).

Unemployment: County paid unemployment insurance of .3% of base salary.

Mileage: Mileage reimbursement of $0.36 per mile.

Callback: Minimum 1 hour; employees called back to attend Court for official business-4 hr minimum.

Standby Pay: 1 hour for every 8 hours on standby.

Bilingual: Bilingual pay is available @ $.25/hour (at least 10% of time)

Education Reimbursement: May be reimbursed for actual costs, subject to availability of funds.

Other: Deputy Sheriff: POST Intermediate Certificate (but not Advanced) 5 ranges extra; POST Advanced Certificate (whether or not have Intermediate Certificate) 10 ranges extra; Sheriff’s Department sworn peace officers: Field Training Officer- $.80/hr; Hazardous Device Team - $.55/hr. (plus overtime where applicable) plus additional $.55hr. for time spent when required to handle a bomb or other explosive device; K-9 -$.55/hr. plus $70.00 biweekly; Motorcycle Officer - $.55/hr.; Correctional Deputies in Fire Suppression may be paid as a temporary for extra duty (time and ½); Emergency Services Team and Pilots $50.00 biweekly.
