Job Description

Under supervision and direction of a Registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or MD performs nursing duties within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act, in the care of patients in a hospital inpatient setting or out patient clinic of a hospital, Public Health clinic or mental health clinic; and to do other work as required. The Licensed Vocational Nurse is not an independent practitioner. Licensed Vocational nurses in this class have less than 1-year experience working as a LVN. Licensed Vocational Nurse I's are distinguished from the Licensed Vocational Nurse II level in that the latter have 1 year or more of nursing experience. The Licensed Vocational Nurse I is distinguished from the class of Nursing Assistant, Health Services Assistant, or Medical Assistant, in that a state license is required of incumbents and they perform a more highly skilled form of nursing care.

Examples of Essential Duties

* Provides nursing care to patients within the scope of the Licensed Vocational Nurse Practice Act; prepares patients for Doctors. Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and cares for them during treatment; administers medications subcutaneous, intramuscularly, intradermal, subdermal, and/or orally. * Takes temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure of patients as necessary; applies and changes dressings; may collect specimens for laboratory analysis; assists doctors, Mid level providers, and Registered Nurses in performing examinations, tests and treatments. * Performs veina-puncture, injections of medications including biological immunizations for pediatric and adults, including the provision of Tuberculin Skin tests, Coccidioidin skin tests and Histoplasmin skin test in the course of a tuberculosis control program. * Performs documentation as required within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act, and established rules of charting. Charts treatments and medications and maintains pertinent medical records; maintains clinical records and reports; reviews charts to determine what type of treatment patient may require and to assure proper clinic scheduling and continuity of care. * Counsels, advises and educates patients regarding proper health care methods; sets clinic appointments per established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Knowledge of: Current principles, techniques and procedures used with in the scope of the Nurse Practice Act for vocational nursing; medical terminology, hospital and/or health care procedures and equipment; medication administration as outlined in the policies and procedures. Ability to: Skillfully perform vocational nursing duties and responsibilities within the scope of professional practice of the Nurse Practice Act, learn and follow policies and procedures; establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, mid level providers, patients and co-workers; complete and maintain reports and clinical records per established policies and procedures.

INSURANCE PLANS: Choice of several medical and dental plans within flexible benefits program. County contributes $395.40 towards flexible benefits. Vision coverage is also available.

PEMHCA Amount: County contribution to Public Employees Medical and Hospital Care program (PEHMCA) in the amount of $25/month is available for retirees health insurance through the County.

RETIREMENT: Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS) equal to 8% of salary. Retirement formula is 3% @ 60. Retirement amount: The highest 12 month period earning level is used to determine the retirement benefit amount. All new employee's pay retirement contributions for the first five years of continuous service.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Two voluntary deferred compensation 457 plans available.

VACATION ACCRUAL: 0-3 years, 80 hours; 4-9 years, 120 hours; 10 or more years, 160 hours.

Accrual limited to 3 times current rate.

HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year. Any employee regularly scheduled to work on a paid holiday will be paid his regular rate for time worked and is entitled to 8 hours (selected classes 1 1/2 time) of holiday pay or compensatory time off.

SICK LEAVE: 4 hours accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual. Upon retirement or death, unused sick leave is paid at a rate of 50% the current salary value after 5 years (not to exceed 960 hours).

BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: 5 days (3 paid, 2 from leave balances).

DISABILITY: County paid short-term disability (STD) of .9% of employee salary up to a maximum of $285.90 per year. Maximum amount received by employee on STD is 55% of hourly wage with a maximum of $249.70 per week. 7 day waiting period.

UNEMPLOYMENT: County pays .3% of base salary.

MILEAGE: Mileage reimbursement of $0.36 per mile.

CALLBACK: Minimum 1-hour callback, some classification 3-hour minimum (Does not apply to all classifications.)

SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL: 3:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. @ $.60/hour, 11:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m. @ $1.20/hour. Selected classifications are 3:00 p.m.-11:00/11:30 p.m. @ $1.00/hour or $1.50/hour; 11:00 p.m.-7:00/7:30 a.m. @$1.55 or $2.25/hour. Selected classifications not eligible for night differential.

STANDBY PAY: 1 hour for every 8 hours on standby; selected classifications: $2.75, $3.00 or $3.75/hour. (Does not apply to all classifications.)

EDUCATION REIMBURSEMENT: May be reimbursed for actual costs, subject to availability of funds.

BILINGUAL PAY: Available @ $.25/hour (at least 10% of time) or $.50/hour (50% of time or must translate before an officially convened court, appeals board, commission or hearing body).

Other: Double time: selected classes for work after 12 hours of continuous duty; selected classes for non-scheduled weekends. Incumbents of professional engineering or facilities project manager position not required to be registered, but who is registered as a Professional Engineer - 10 range differential; licensed land surveyor - 10 range differential; architecture license - 10 range differential. Critical care differential for LVN's in selected areas - $.80/hr. In-charge differential for LVN's - $.42/hr.; for LPT's - $.43/hr. Temporarily assigned overall RCRMC respiratory therapist responsibilities for Respiratory Therapist. Registered - $.43/hr. LVN Preceptor - $.50/hr.; Radiology Preceptor - $1.00/hr. Rehabilitative Services - $2.25 or $4.25/hr. Haz Mat Mgmt Specialist - $150/mo. Forensic Mental Health Differential 17 ranges. Uniforms provided for selected classes. Education for Continued Licensing - see MOU for details.
