This is responsible technical and accounting work assisting in the maintenance of a system of governmental accounting records.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Attainment of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university in accounting; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORKGood knowledge of general accounting principles; ability to adapt accounting methods to particular problems of moderate complexity; ability to perform fairly difficult mathematical computations quickly and accurately; ability to operate computers and job related financial software systems; ability to keep a comprehensive set of accounting records; ability to prepare closing entries, to take trial balances and to verify, analyze and reconcile accounts; ability to write clear, concise summaries of audits; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with public officials, department heads, employees and the general public.

Description

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)  Codes and classifies receipts and expenditures according to a standard classification; sees that daily cash and receipts submitted by operating departments balance; posts and distributes cash receipts to general fund and capital fund subsidiary ledger and balances these accounts; balances budget allotment accounts and ledgers; examines vouchers, claims, invoices, payrolls and checks with supporting data for conformity with law and established procedure and regulations prior to payment; prints checks and prepares for mailing; reconciles accounts payable and accounts receivable; calculates and processes payroll deductions; processes direct payroll deposits; maintains depreciation schedules for fixed assets; assists in the preparation of budget documents; develops financial statements; assists in grant application and administration processes; drafts collection letters for past due accounts receivable; conducts audits and prepares letters to directors and department heads on review of findings; performs related work as required.

COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS

MEDICAL EXAMINATION:  Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work.  The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board.  Appointees must bear the cost of the examination. 
 
The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for an interview.  In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A "Practice Test Seminar" is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month.   The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices.  Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
