General Information

This is entry level routine work enforcing animal control laws, ordinances and regulations.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. Requirements

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and a minimum of one year experience working with the public, preferably working with animals; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Special Requirement:
Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence. Must obtain Euthanasia Certification within the first six months of employment.

Essential Requirements of the Work:
Some knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations governing the capture, custody and disposition of animals; some knowledge of safety practices and procedures in dealing with animals; some knowledge of the geography of the area assigned to patrol; some knowledge of the tools and techniques employed in animal euthanasia; ability to read, interpret and explain animal control laws, ordinances and regulations; ability to make clear, concise reports; ability to operate animal control vehicles; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to operate a two-way radio; ability to perform strenuous tasks such as lifting, carrying, crawling and running; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

Description

Examples of Work:
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Investigates complaints about vicious, diseased, nuisance or stray animals; picks up animals running loose or being kept in violation of laws and ordinances; transports animals to the animal shelter; dispatches personnel by two-way radio to investigate complaints; records location where animals were captured; feeds and cares for animals; administers medications and vaccinations; euthanizes sick, suspicious or unclaimed animals; disposes of bodies of dead animals; operates animal control vehicles; enforces animal control laws, ordinances and regulations; issues warrants for violation of ordinances; refers those who refuse to comply with animal control ordinances to the proper authority; attends court and submits pictures and physical evidence; unloads food and supplies from supply trucks; cleans vehicles and animal shelter facilities; checks in animals using security stick while handling animals; sees that animals are properly tagged and penned; releases animals to proper owner; assists customers in the adoption of animals; assists in maintaining vehicles and equipment; keeps daily records of all calls and complaints answered, gasoline used and mileage driven; files complaints about biting animals; makes activity reports; works after normal business hours on a rotational basis and on weekends, as assigned; performs related work as required.

Important Information

Distinguishing Features of the Work:
An employee in this class is responsible for patrolling an assigned area and for performing routine custodial tasks in enforcing animal control laws, ordinances and regulations.  Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures and requires the exercise of some independent judgment with public contact and enforcement problems. Injuries from animals pose a work hazard for employees in this class.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION:  Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work.  The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board.  Appointees must bear the cost of the examination. 
 
The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview.  In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A "Practice Test Seminar" is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month.   The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices.  Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
