GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs semiskilled work assisting in the construction, maintenance, and operation of an electric distribution system; does related work as required. Work is performed under close supervision of an Electric Line Crew Leader.
 
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms' length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. Performs work on energized electrical lines and equipment at heights up to 100 feet.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Assisting in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution systems and related facilities.
Performs work on lines and equipment energized at or below 15,000 volts.
Operates bucket trucks, line trucks, trenchers, backhoes, etc.
Assists with installing electric service lines, erecting power transmission and distribution poles, hooking up transformers, installing secondary cables, installing overhead and underground lines, reinstalling lines, etc.
Maintains street lights, area lights, flood lights, and traffic lights.
Keeps trucks stocked with materials and tools.
Performs landscaping duties.
Assists in troubleshooting power outages and restoration of power as safely and efficiently as possible to minimize outage time.
Assists with repairs of faulted secondary and primary conductors, replacement of bad transformers, replacement of damaged poles, switches, lightning arresters, fuses, and connectors.
Installs work zone protective devices such as warning signs, flags, cones, etc.; serves as a flagman in work zones to direct traffic safely through the zone.
Climbs wooden poles as required.
Works outside normal hours in emergencies and performs on-call duties.
Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of electric line construction and maintenance and the hazards encountered; ability and willingness to learn to set poles, string wire, and perform related work; ability to perform manual labor; ability to follow oral directions; ability to observe safety rules and regulations; strength to perform manual work and physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions; ability to climb poles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and minimal experience in the electrical field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. 
CPR and basic first aid certification required.
