Operates and maintains the county’s spray field for processing wastewater effluent.

Essential Job Functions

Assists in training and instructing staff in methods and procedures.

Maintains grounds of spray field and around monitoring wells at wastewater treatment plant facilities through the operation of tractors, mowers and weed-eaters and the use of chemicals, pesticides and herbicides.

Maintains internal roads of spray field through the operation of heavy equipment (i.e., backhoes, bucket loaders, farm tractors, flatbeds, dozers, trenchers, lowboys, cranes, vacuum trucks, dump trucks).

Inspects the spray field and all supporting equipment; ensures safe and proper operating conditions.

Performs maintenance and repair on water lines, spray heads, spray guns and related devices.

Performs maintenance and repair on mechanical devices and equipment (i.e., electric motors, pumps, electronic oiler systems, valve and control panels, air compressor system, air lines).

Operates the spray field’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in order to monitor and maintain holding pond levels.

Maintains and repairs fences and gates.

Removes and distributes treated waste in both liquid and cake form.

Maintains drying beds.

Maintains sod fields.

Maintains water levels for cattle and the automatic float valves and hoses that are associated with the watering system.

Transports heavy equipment.

Maintains logs and prepares reports.

Maintains sufficient inventories.

Addresses questions and complaints from the public that are related to the spray field.

Draws samples for laboratory and monitoring purposes.

Must be able to meet work schedule and attendance standards.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in the field of wastewater treatment, to include specific experience in the operation of a spray field and associated heavy equipment; certification as a class “C” Wastewater Treatment Operator is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be computer literate. Requires a valid, Class “A”, Commercial Driver License.

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, tractors, front-end loaders and related equipment requiring manipulation of multiple controls and manipulative abilities where eye/hand/foot coordination are important ingredients to safe and productive operations. Must be physically able to operate hand-held electronic equipment. Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 to 100 pounds of force frequently, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time. May be subject to a certain degree of danger or risk when working in extreme atmospheric conditions or high vehicular traffic areas. Is exposed to possible bodily injury from chemicals/toxic agents, pathogenic substances and hazardous waste. May be subject to insects, reptiles, spiders and rodents.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of field conditions, heavy equipment and supporting field equipment.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information; includes issuing and receiving assignments and/or directions. Requires the ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers.

Language Ability: Must be able to communicate effectively in Standard English, and to articulate information to others.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from standardized situations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.

Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add and subtract totals. May require the ability to multiply and divide.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately in manipulating multiple controls on heavy equipment, and repairing and servicing spray field support equipment.

Manual Dexterity: Must have excellent levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. Avoids violent behavior and any other type of behavior that could threaten the safety of other employees or the public.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk or hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to hear and understand communications through telephone and radio.
