Description

The San Diego Unified School District accepts Paraeducator applications on a continuous basis for regular monthly and substitute assignments.  Paraeducators support the instructor in the daily activities of the classroom. Positions assigned to the Special Education program work with students with all types of special needs including physical and mental challenges. 

Positions typically work part-time, 10 months per year.  Substitute assignments are on-call as needed.  Part-time positions may not be eligible for benefits.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma/GED (Foreign Equivalency Certification is required for education completed outside of the United States) AND 

  • A passing score on the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) administered by the San Diego Unified School District OR
  • An Associate's Degree (or higher) or 48 or more eligible units of coursework at a recognized college or university (Foreign Equivalency Certification is required for education completed outside of the United States) .

Foreign Equivalency Certification: Individuals that have completed high school or college-level coursework at an institution in a country other than the United States must provide a Foreign Equivalency Certification to satisfy the education requirement.  A Foreign Equivalency Certification can be obtained for a fee from a professional organization that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. Listed below are acceptable providers for your reference.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Personal appearance, grooming and language patterns which will provide a satisfactory example to pupils.
  • Some positions may require conversational and/or written skills in a specific foreign language related to the needs of the assignment.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's license and availability of transportation may be required for positions that require travel between sites within the regular work day.

Child Development Center Assistant - Head Start: A Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, an associate's degree or bachelor's degree is required to meet federally mandated requirements for positions staffed in the Head Start Program. 

Substitute Special Education Technician: Possession of a current infant, child, and adult cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.  American Heart Association or American Red Cross certificate preferred. On-line certificates will not be accepted.

Application Process
In order to be eligible for consideration, interested candidates must submit the following documents:

  • Online employment application.  
  • Attach any additional documentation that may be required for the position(s) you are interested in (such as proof of education and/or CPR Certificate). Additional documents may be attached to the online employment application, faxed to (619) 296-7522 or submitted to Human Resources at 4100 Normal Street, Suite 1241, San Diego, CA 92103. 
  • Applicants that do not have 48 or more eligible units of college-level coursework, will be invited to take the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE). There is a fee of $7 for the exam. Candidates must provide a copy of a High School Diploma, GED, or Foreign Equivalency Certificate to be admitted to the exam.
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and express interest in regulary/monthly assignments, will be placed on an Eligible List for a duration of one year.  The Eligible List will be used to fill vacancies as needed. 

Substitute Employment Process
Candidates interested in substitute assignments must complete the application process as instructed above and select the job title of the positions they are interested in.  Prospective employees will be subject to the following pre-employment process:
  • Submit a Tuberculosis (TB) clearance (administered within the last year).
  • Livescan Fingerprinting administered by the San Diego Unified School District at the candidate's own expense. Candidates interested in the Extended Day Assistant position will require an additional fingerprinting fee for FBI clearance.

Upon passing the pre-employment process, individuals will be added to the substitute pool to positions for which they qualify and have expressed interest in.
